Basil
[Sweet] Essential Oil
ocimim basilicum - Vietnam
Used throughout
the ages, for soothing and calming the digestive, muscular and endocrine
systems. Sweet Basil can help support concentration when studying,
and helps combat mental fatigue. It is an excellent nerve tonic,
and helps to soothe and support mood. It has a calming effect on
the gastric system, and helps support digestion. Basil is warming
and toning; restoring peace of mind and counteracting depression.
Basil is also clarifying, uplifting, energizing.
Suggested
Use
- When mixed
with Grapeseed oil, Basil can help soothe muscle aches and pains.
- Basil also
serves as a natural insect repellent.
- Blend with
Clary Sage and diffuse to deep relaxation or sleep.
- Apply a few
drops to a tissue and inhale; or add to a diffuser. This is great
to wake up and get your brain cells going, while staying centered
and conscious.
- Blend Basil
Essential Oil with Grapeseed or Olive Oil to make it less concentrated.
Then add it to sauces and salad dressings, or stir into savory
dishes before serving. Tastes just like freshly harvested basil!
Blends Well
With
Lavender,
Clary
Sage, Thyme, Cedarwood,
Bergamot,
Rose
Geranium, Hyssop.
Chemical
composition
Basil
oil has various chemical compounds that include a-pinene, camphene,

Bay
Laurel Essential Oil
laurus nobilis - France
Powerful, spicy-medicinal
odor, just like the Bay Leaves used in cooking. The warm, spicy
fragrance of Laurel leaf is wonderful for relieving stress and anxiety,
calming. Both uplifting and grounding, it is reported to clear mental
confusion and clarify thought processes.
Bay Laurel has
been recognized since ancient times for its regenerating and antiseptic
characteristics. It is known to contain antibacterial and anti-fungal
properties. Bay Laurel also has an affinity for the lymphatic system,
and acts as a detoxifier. It is a favorite for
massage, and used to benefit any detoxification program.
Suggested
Use
- Add 9 drops
to 1oz. of unscented body or hair care product to enhance their
properties.
- Great for
toning treatments and hair care. Caution: dosing too high can
result in sensitization.
- You can use
this oil for cooking, in any recipe that calls for the dried leaves.
Since one drop represents the Essential Oil of an entire handful
of leaves, make sure you blend it with a Carrier Oil prior to
using in the kitchen; Olive, Canola or Grapeseed Oil are great
choices (3 drops per 1oz. of Carrier Oil).
Chemical
composition
The chemical composition of bay oil includes; a-pinene, b-pinene,
myrcene, limonene, linalool, methyl chavicol, neral, a-terpineol,
geranyl acetate, eugenol and chavicol.
Blends Well
With
Pine, Cypress
and Juniper, Lavender. Frankincense and Clary Sage would be good
partners in a spiritual/meditative blend. Combine it with Rosemary
for a high-powered study blend. Citrus oils and other spices are
also very nice. Please use in moderation, since it is easily overpowering
other aromas and can make you feel drowsy.
Safety
No known toxicity, non-irritant, causes sensitization in some people
if used in high concentration. Use in moderation due to the narcotic
properties of its main ingredient, methyl eugenol. Avoid in pregnancy
and use only very diluted.

Bergamot
Essential Oil
citrus bergamia - Italy
Most people
know this aroma through Earl Grey tea, which is flavored with Bergamot
Oil. Great aroma to balance the mind and regenerate. A fruity citrus
oil of spicy-floral freshness, it is powerful in supporting emotional
balance. Many studies have shown that it supports mood. Bergamot
is recognized in aromatherapy for its soothing effects, and can
be used in a bath, inhaled, or used for a massage. Citrus oils help
to eliminate emotional confusion and increase ones sense of humor
and well-being.
Be sure the
phototoxic element - furocoumarin - has been removed from the Bergamot
oil before using as phototoxic pigmentation of the skin lasts for
a long time.
Suggested
Use
- Use a few
drops in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your home.
- Sniff directly
from the bottle to feel fresh and fight melancholy.
- Citrus Essential
Oils are among the few Essential Oils with a limited shelf life.
Keep your citrus oils away from heat and direct sunlight, and
in tightly closed containers; your fridge would be great!
- Use your
citrus oils within 6 months of purchase to ensure appropriate
strength for medicinal or skin care purposes.
- Oils over
6 months old can still add citrus-power to a diffuser blend.
Chemical
composition
The essential oil is composed of various chemical constituents and
includes a-pinene, myrcene, limonene, a-bergaptene, b-bisabolene,
linalool, linalyl acetate, nerol, neryl acetate, geraniol, geraniol
acetate and a-terpineol.
Blends Well
With
Citrus Essential Oils blend well with a lot of different oils, "lifting"
a blend to make it appear more energetic and lively. Neroli, Rose,
Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Geranium, Palmarosa and many others.
Safety
Use only furocoumarin-free Bergamot oil. Bergamot is photo-toxic.
Do not expose areas to the sun or suntan beds where Bergamot has
been applied, as it will cause sunburn. Severe phototoxic effects
are possible, more so than with other citrus oils. Use in low concentration
in skin care as some individuals may react sensitive. It is recommended
to wait at least 12 hours before exposure. No known toxicity.

Black Spruce oil: "Antiseptic, expectorant, and antitussive,
black spruce oil is an ideal remedy for all lung ailments (e.g.
asthma and bronchitis) whether utilized as an inhalant or a cough

transmitted in and by black spruce effectively vibrates throughout
the respiratory, nervous and glandular systems."

Kurt Schnaubelt's book,

Carrot
Seed Essential Oil
daucus carota - India
Carrot Seed
primarily works to support the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and skin.
It is used in many anti-aging skin formulas, as it contains strong
regenerative properties. Carrot Seed can help promote healthy levels
of hemoglobin in the blood. It is a great anti-inflammatory agent,
and blends well with Helichrysum.
Refreshing and
stimulating. Active. Clearing and comforting. Great in skin care
(revitalizing and toning) and considered one of the best Essential
Oils for Mature Skin.
The oil is often
employed orally for regeneration of liver tissue. One drop taken
daily is the recommended protocol; this may be particularly useful
during a period of dietary restriction as part of an overall liver
cleansing program. In 'Aromatherapy Scent and Psyche', Peter Damian
notes: "Diuretic and hepatic, carrot seed operates as a kidney
and liver cleanser, particularly indicated for jaundice and hepatitis.
Its detoxifying properties are likewise effective for treating arthritis
and rheumatism."
Carrot seed
is a premier skin healing oil, regularly included in blends for
dry and mature skin. The oil's high carotol content gives it its
skin-rejuvenative properties. It can be added to nearly any skin
care blend to enhance its effectiveness. Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt recommends
the following blend for "dull, pallid skin, lifeless and tired
from environmental stress...It is based on the regenerating, stimulating
qualities of Carrot Seed"- Carrot Seed oil: .5ml, Lemon Verbena:
.5ml, Niaouli: .5ml, Rosemary Verbenone: .5ml, based in 50ml of
Hazelnut oil. Carrot seed will also blend well with Helichrysum
and Rosemary Verbenone with Rosehip Seed for skin healing. Further,
carrot seed oil is said to balance both dry and oily complexions.
Small amounts would go nicely in almost any skin care blend, and
could be used alone in a neutral base cream.
Carrot seed
is also said to rejuvenate the energy of the solar plexus, and to
be relieving of fatigue. It is also regularly indicated as a digestive
tonic.
Suggested Use:
Add 6-12 drops of Ancient Legacy's Dry Skin or Mature Skin Blends
(which contain Carrot Seed) to 1oz. of unscented body care product.
This could be a lotion, massage oil or simply a plant oil (Carrier
Oil). Use on the skin in a carrier, alone or included with other
essential oils. Blend as a natural perfume. Recommended by some
natural health professionals taken internally, one drop per day
during liver cleansing. Carrot seed oil may help with conditions
of dry and mature skin, jaundice, hepatitis and other symptoms of
a toxic liver.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
constituents of carrot seed oil include a-pinene, camphene, b-pinene,
sabinene, myrcene, y-terpinene, limonene, b-bisabolene, geranyl
acetate and carotol.
Blends Well
With: Great with citrus and evergreen type oils, Frankincense, Lavender,
Rosewood, Blue Cypress, Geranium etc.
Safety:
Carrot Seed
oil is not distilled from our regular carrot plant, but from its
ancestor. Carrot oil appearing on a cosmetics label could also mean
on oily extract of the common carrot, or Tagetes oil, which is sometimes
called "carrot oil" for no good reason.
Its in your
skin's best interest that "carrot oil" be "carrot
seed oil".
Non-toxic, non-irritating,
non-sensitizing. Always test a small amount of essential oil first
for sensitivity or allergic reaction. If pregnant, use under a doctor's
care.

cedrus atlantica - Morocco
Cedarwood, Atlas
assists the body to support a healthy respiratory system. Dry/woody
aroma, slightly camphoraceous, smoky, balsamic. Pine-like. Warming,
uplifting, and toning. Comforting and reviving. Considered an aphrodisiac
in that it is grounding and inspiring at the same time. Confidence
building. Long lasting, acts as a fixative (a fixative is a substance
that binds other compounds, slowing down their evaporation and thereby
making their fragrance last longer). Antiseptic, astringent, diuretic,
expectorant, fungicidal, calming, strengthening, rejuvenating, sedative,
insecticide, tonic. ancient Egyptians used this oil in various ways,
namely to embalm the deceased, for cosmetics and for perfumery.

(see Ancient Legacy's Himalayan Cedarwood).
Suggested Use
Diffuse 10 to 20 drops of Cedarwood, Atlas into the air, or add
to a massage base such as Grapeseed or Jojoba blending oil and apply
to the chest and back. 20 to 30 drops of Cedarwood, Atlas added
to 1 cup of unscented Dead Sea salts in a hot bath can help soothe
various skin conditions. One can also mix 5 drops into one application
of shampoo (1 tablespoon) and apply to the head for relief of hair
loss and irritations of the scalp. Cedarwood, Atlas is also used
as an effective, natural insect repellant. Your closet should smell
like Cedarwood to keep moths out, and you may want to place tissues
with drops of Cedarwood (and Lavender), as well as your empty Cedarwood
bottles, in your closet.
Blends Well
With: Great in most blends, gives them a spirited note, while helping
them to last longer. Blends well with the citrus oils, giving them
a base note that very nicely complements them. Its a nice masculine
note to add to aphrodisiac blends. Nice also with Rosemary, Chamomile,
Eucalyptus and many more. Bergamot, cypress, and all other tree
oils; jasmine, juniper, neroli, rose, rosemary, thyme.
Caution
Do not use when pregnant, and do not take internally. Non-toxic,
non-irritant. Avoid during pregnancy. Avoid in pregnancy. Possible
irritant to sensitive skin or in strong dilution. Inhaling the fragrance
is stimulating and possibly counteracts the sedative effects of
drugs like pentobarbital. Not to be used with high BP or heart problems.

Cinnamon
Bark Essential Oil
cinnamon zeylan - Madagascar
Cinnamomum zeylanicum
Cinnamon bark
has been used to soothe intestinal infection. Commonly used for
its fragrance and therapeutic actions in toothpaste, nasal sprays,
mouthwash, cough syrups, and dental preparations. Sweet-spicy, herbaceous,
peppery, somewhat resembling clove & cinnamon, slightly woody,
powerful and exotic, warm.
Warming, tonic,
aphrodisiac, restorative, uplifting. Not appropriate for body or
hair care, due to possible sensitizing. Cinnamon was a popular aphrodisiac,
spice and antiseptic, and largely the reason for the occupation
of Ceylon in 1505 by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the British.
Popular in oriental type perfumes. Antibiotic, antiseptic, antispasmodic,
aphrodisiac, astingent, digestive, hemostatic, orexigenic, parasticide,
refrigerant, spasmolytic, stimulant, stomachic.
Suggested Use:
Cinnamon - when used in very small amounts - is a valuable addition
to many Aromatherapy blends, adding warmth, spice and inspiration.
However, avoid its use in body or hair care products as some individuals
are sensitive to the oil.
Try making your
own 'gingerbread honey' or syrup, and adding it to tea or desserts.
This is not only delicious but helps to soothe the stomach as well.
The following is a wonderful recipe for such a honey, great also
for a homemade gift.
To 2oz. of maple
syrup or honey, add:
* 3 drops Ginger
Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cardamom Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
* 3 drops Vanilla Essential Oil
* 8 drops of certified organic Orange or Mandarin Orange Essential
Oil
It has been
used for thousands of years for a variety of complaints including
colds, flu, digestive and menstrual problems, rheumatism, kidney
troubles, and as a general stimulant.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
components of the essential oil, obtained from the leaves, are eugenol,
eugenol acetate, cinnamic aldehyde and benzyl benzoate
Blends Well
With: Frankincense, Lavender, Cedarwood, Elemi, citrus oils, Ylang
Ylang and other floral notes, Benzoin. Clove, Ylang Ylang, Orange,
Mandarin, Lemon, Grapefruit, Benzoin, Frankincense, Geranium, Lemongrass,
Marjoram and Patchouli.
Safety

Cinnamon leaf is less of an irritant, cinnamon bark oil should be
avoided completely in skin care. Cinnamon Bark is GRAS (Generally
Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor. Avoid in pregnancy,
with small children or the elderly. Cinnamon needs to be well diluted
in a base oil before application. Do not use undiluted on the skin

Eucalyptus
Citriodora Essential Oil
eucalytus citriodora - Austrailia
Eucalyptus Citriodora
is used as an extremely effective natural insect repellent. Dilute
in Grapeseed blending oil and spray all over the body. Renew as
necessary. Eucalyptus Citriodora is recommended by the FDA as a
replacement for DEET, which is a substance used in other repellants
that they determined unsafe. Eucalyptus Citriodora is also helpful
in the treatment of colds, fevers, and various skin conditions.
It is a mild irritant, and best used when diluted with Grapeseed
blending oil. Fresh, cooling, camphoraceous, with woody undertones.
As the name suggests, this Eucalyptus has a distinct citrus-like
quality that is much like citronella/lemongrass. Its aroma is fresh
and strong with pleasant, soft undertones. Cooling, refreshing,
energizing. Its fresh aroma is great to deodorize and to keep insects
at bay. Both Western and Eastern medicine have used Eucalyptus for
its support of the respiratory system, and it is a popular ingredient
for cough and throat medicine and chest ointments.
Traditional
folk medicine has used its cooling effect to ease feverish conditions.
There is another historic reason why Eucalyptus is also commonly
called "Fever tree": When the British colonists came to
Australia, they found that planting Eucalyptus groves helped to
keep insects and thereby contagious diseases at bay. Being highly
water-hungry plants, the Eucalyptus trees also aided in drying out
waterlogged, marshy soils, turning them into arable land, and reducing
the breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Today 75% of
all trees grown in Australia are of the Eucalyptus family.
Antiseptic,
astringent, tonic, antispasmodic, deodorant, expectorant, stimulant,
antibiotic, febrifuge.
Suggested Use:
Use in a diffuser to freshen your environment. Add 2-3 drops to
a bowl of hot water to inhale the fragrant steam, or use it in the
sauna/steam bath.
Add 5-10 drops
to 1oz. of unscented body care product, less if you are making body
care for children. Eucalyptus is a great ingredient when massaging
sore, aching muscles or as an energizing sports massage. Simply
add up to 10 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil or Ancient Legacy's
Muscle Cool Blend (which contains Eucalyptus) to 1oz. of Carrier
Oil or unscented massage oil/lotion.
The oil, is
useful for lung diseases, sore throat, gout, syphilis, gonorrhea,
typhoid, varicose ulcers, worms, colds, croup, diphtheria, malaria,
neuralgia, piles, and sore throat. It can be used as a vapor bath
and inhaled for asthma and other respiratory ailments. Rubbed on
the skin, oil of eucalyptus gives relief from the pain of arthritis,
and rheumatism. The oil is commonly used in steam inhalation for
colds and flu, a few whiffs is often all it takes to clear a stuffy
nose and a foggy head.
Blends Well
With: Most herbs, like Thyme, Marjoram, Rosemary, and Lavender.
Cedarwood. Myrtle Lemon, Frankincense, and others. Eucalyptus is
a very dominant aroma that never takes the "back seat"
in a blend. Eucalyptus blends well with Thyme, Chamomile, Rosemary,
Lavender, Marjoram, Pine, Cedarwood, Geranium Grapefruit and Lemon.

Eucalyptus Globules Essential Oil
eucalyptus globules - Madagascar
The major constituent
in eucalyptus leaves is a volatile oil known as eucalyptol (1,8-cineol).
In order to provide an effective expectorant and antiseptic action,
the leaf oil should contain approximately 70-85% eucalyptol. Eucalyptus
oil is said to function in a fashion similar to that of menthol
by acting on receptors in the nasal mucosa, leading to a reduction
in symptoms such as nasal congestion. In test tube studies, eucalyptus
species have been shown to possess antibacterial actions against
such organisms as bacillus subtilis, as well as several strains
of streptococcus. Eucalyptus has a clear, sharp, fresh and very
distinctive smell, is pale yellow in color and watery in viscosity.
The Australian
Aborigines calls it 'kino' and they use the leaves to cover serious
wounds. Eucalyptus oil was introduced to Europe in 1788, and the
first oil exported to England was called 'Sydney peppermint'. It
was extracted from Eucalyptus peperita which is a more industrial
type of oil.
The tree uses
a lot of water while growing and has been used to clear water-logged
land, draining the water from swamps where malaria mosquito may
be found. The tree was thought to prevent malaria in the past, due
to this draining action.
The therapeutic
properties of eucalyptus oil are analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory,
anti-neuralgic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral,
astringent, balsamic, cicatrisant, decongestant, deodorant, depurative,
diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, rubefacient, stimulant,
vermifuge and vulnerary.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
components of eucalyptus oil are a-pinene, b-pinene, a-phellandrene,
1,8-cineole, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, aromadendrene, epiglobulol,
piperitone and globulol.
Uses
Eucalyptus oil
has a cooling and deodorizing effect on the body, helping with fevers,
migraine and malaria. For the respiratory tract, it helps with coughs,
asthma, throat infections, sinusitis and catarrhal conditions. It
soothes inflammation and eases mucus, clearing the head from the
stuffiness of colds and hay fever.
Eucalyptus oil
is useful as a warming oil when used for muscular aches and pains,
rheumatoid arthritis, sprains and poor circulation.
In skin care
it can be used for burns, blisters, herpes, cuts, wounds, skin infections
and insect bites. It can furthermore boost the immune system and
is helpful in cases of chicken pox, colds, flu and measles.
Eucalyptus oil
is very helpful when used for headaches, fevers, ailments of the respiratory
tract, muscular aches and pains and in skin care. It has a soothing
and calming effect on the whole body and helps with the immune system.
The oil is also
effective against bacteria - especially staphylococci, and has a
refreshing and stimulating action on the mind, helping to improve
concentration.
* Burners and
vaporizers
o In vapor therapy, eucalyptus oil may be used for: frequent sneezing,
hay fever, flu, respiratory problems, as an insect repellant, headaches
and for helping to improve concentration.
* Blended massage oil or in the bath
o Eucalyptus oil can be used in blended massage oil, or diluted
in the bath, to assist with arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, mucous
congestion, colds, headaches, rheumatism, sinusitis, catarrh, fatigue
and muscular aches and pains.
* In a cream or lotion
o Apart from giving pain relief to muscular spasms and rheumatism,
eucalyptus oil can also help speed up the healing of slow healing
wounds and ulcers, calm skin eruptions and clear congested skin.
* Used neat or dab on with a bud
o Eucalyptus oil can be used neat on the skin for insect bites or
wounds, but care should be taken when doing so.
* Gargle
o When very diluted eucalyptus oil is added to a gargle, so it can
be used for soothing a sore throat.

Frankincense
Essential Oil
boswellia carteri somaliz - Ethiopia
Frankincense
has been popular since ancient times and is centering, comforting
and elevating. It is associated with spirituality. It has antiseptic
and astringent properties that make it useful for the skin, especially
mature or dry skin. It is one of the firm favorites in aromatherapy.
This essential oil has a wonderfully calming effect on the mind
and helps to create inner peace, while helping to sooth the respiratory
and urinary tract and relieve pain associated with rheumatism and
muscular aches, while having a rejuvenating, balancing and healing
action on the skin.
Resinous and
incense-like. Balsamic and slightly camphoraceous. Rich, sweet,
with a dry quality. The therapeutic properties of frankincense oil
are antiseptic, astringent, carminative, cicatrisant, cytophylactic,
digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic,
uterine, vulnerary and expectorant.
Visualizing,
spiritually connecting, centering. Probably the most introspective
oil. Balances extremes of emotion and restores inner tranquility.
Clearing, purifying, warming, uplifting and revitalizing.
One of the best
aromas for creating a meditative environment.
Frankincense
is also a great fixative (a fixative is a substance that binds other
compounds, slowing down their evaporation and thereby making their
fragrance last longer) and preservative. It's also a valuable ingredient
in skin care for mature and dry complexions.
The potency
and incredible fragrancing power of this Essential Oil make it a
great investment, even though it is one of the pricier oils. If
you find it hard to dose the pure oil correctly (it is incredibly
strong and intense!), or shy away from the cost, start with Essential
Oils blended with Jojoba Oil, classified as"i/J"("in
Jojoba"). Frankincense slows and deepens the breath, and is
used to support meditation, spiritual quest and prayer in many different
cultures, from Catholic/Orthodox Christianity to India, China etc.
It has forever been associated with divinity, and allegedly was
one of the presents given to the newborn Christ. However, it is
mentioned a total of 22 times in the bible
Frankincense
is harvested by incising the tree trunks, much like when harvesting
maple syrup or natural gum. The excreted resin hardens, and forms
so called "tears".
Uses
Frankincense
oil soothes and calms the mind, slowing down and deepening breathing
and is excellent for use when meditating. It also helps to calm
anxiety and obsessive states linked to the past.
On the respiratory
tract, it clears the lungs and helps with shortness of breath, asthma,
bronchitis, laryngitis, coughs and colds.
It can be useful
to ease heavy periods, is a general tonic to the uterus and has
a calming effect during labor. It is also most helpful for rheumatism
and has a positive impact on the urinary tract.
Frankincense
oil is said to help rejuvenate an ageing skin, is a skin tonic and
is effective with sores, carbuncles, wounds, scars and skin inflammation.
If you are purchasing
this Essential Oil blended with Jojoba, increase the number of drops
you add to your body care or bath according to your liking. You
can use oils blended with Jojoba in a diffuser, but it is not recommended
in diffusers that work with cotton pads - Car Diffuser, Scent Ball,
Spa Scenter - or nebulizers. If using an aromalamp or Ancient Legacy's
Aromashell it will leave an oily residue that can be washed away;
but do not overheat the lamp dish!
Chemical composition
The main chemical components of frankincense oil are a-pinene, actanol,
linalool, octyl acetate, bornyl acetate, incensole and incensyl acetate.blends

It blends well
with
Benzoin, sandalwood, lavender, myrrh, pine, orange, bergamot and
lemon. Citrus oils like Orange, Bergamot, Neroli, Lavender, Clary
Sage (for high flying spirits!), Patchouli & Vetiver, Rose and
Sandalwood;
Safety
Frankincense oil is non-toxic and non-irritant and can be used by

Ginger
Essential Oil
zingiber officinale - Indonesia
Though unsightly
in its natural appearance, ginger is one of the most highly valued
spices in the world. Not only does it give food a unique spicy,
peppery flavor, it's also renowned for its healing properties. For
centuries, different cultures worldwide have embraced it and sung
its praises. These days, aromatherapists use its warming and soothing
qualities to combat digestive and joint complaints, mood swings
and to help increase libido. Smells much like powdered Ginger; warm,
spicy. Stimulating, warming, aphrodisiac and tonic. Helps to soothe
the stomach. The vigorously growing plant mostly spreads via its
energetic, tuberous roots. The plant is presenting a large and highly
unusual flower at the time of bloom. Ginger has a long history of
healing for its warming, digestion stimulating properties. In Chinese
medicine, it is specified as a warming herb with affinity for the
lungs and the intestines. In Ayurvedic cooking, it is added to dishes
to enhance a meal's digestability. Interestingly, ginger essential
oil has been noted to assist other essential oils in reaching their
target organs.
Ginger oil is
traditionally used to alleviate motion sickness, and can be used
as a general digestive tonic for upset stomachs. In the British
Herbal Pharmacopoeia, is is specifically indicated for flatulent
intestinal colic. In aromatherapy liturature, ginger oil is also
noted as a carminative, stimulant, rubefacient, aperative, stomachic,
antiseptic, general tonic, febrifuge and analgesic. Ginger essential
oil has also been indicated for improvement of circulation in the
joints and muscles, possibly helping arthritis, rheumatism and general
aches and pains. It may be added to almost any massage blend for
this purpose; its relative strenth allows for low concentrations.
Suggested Use
Apply a few drops to a tissue and inhale; or add to a diffuser.
When using Ginger
in skincare, please keep in mind that this is a hot and spicy oil
- great for warming the tissue and many healing applications - but
also prone to causing irritation when used in high concentrations.
Adding a Ginger-type
blend to a warm bath brings welcome stimulation to sore, stiff and
overworked muscles. In order to prevent the oils from floating on
the surface, blend the Essential Oil with some Half & Half,
honey, vinegar or Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier before adding
it to the water.
Ginger Essential
Oil is great to replace powdered ginger in the kitchen. For example,
try making your own 'gingerbread honey' or syrup, and adding it
to tea or desserts. This is not only delicious but helps to soothe
the stomach as well. The following is a wonderful recipe for such
a honey, great also for a homemade gift.
To 2oz. of maple
syrup or honey, add:
* 3 drops Ginger
Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cardamom Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
* 3 drops Vanilla Essential Oil
* 8 drops of certified organic Orange or Mandarin Orange Essential
Oil
For an easy
version, blend one drop of Ginger Oil with a teaspoon of honey and
enjoy with a steaming hot cup of tea; great for an upset stomach
or to fight the onset of a cold or flu.
For support
of the resperatory system, ginger oil can be used as part of a chest
rub blend, in a bath, or in hot tea.
Ginger is also
noted as a sexual tonic - Women in Senegal weave ginger root in
the belts of their mates to increase sexual potency. For stomach
upset, add a few drops of Ginger oil to warm water and drink slowly.
Rub on temples and stomach for motion sickness. Also may be used
in a diffuser to bring energy to a room.
Chemical composition
The essential
oil has various chemical constituents including the following: a-pinene,
camphene, b-pinene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, borneol, y-terpineol,
nerol, neral, geraniol, geranial, geranyl acetate, b-bisabolene
and zingiberene.
Blends Well
With
Citrus oils, woods, resins, the aphrodisiac oils (Vetiver, Patchouli,
Rose, Ylang Ylang, Neroli, Sandalwood). Ginger is great to add zing
and fire to a blend.
\safety
No known toxicity. However, due to its intensity use only in moderation,
skin irritation possible at high concentration. GRAS (Generally
Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor. Slightly phototoxic
(avoid sunlight after applying to skin). Always test a small amount
of essential oil first for sensitivity or allergic reaction. Can
be sensitizing with repeated use. Avoid direct sunlight after use.

Pink
Grapefruit Essential Oil
citrus paradisi - USA
Grapefruit essential
oil has a sharp refreshing smell and is pale yellow in color. The
viscosity is watery. Fruity, bitter citrus scent, reminiscent of
the peel of the fruit. Red Grapefruit has a unique flavor that is
more refined and"yummy"than that of White Grapefruit.
Cleansing and
satisfying. Popular oil to help with weight loss. Stimulating and
refreshing, uplifting and nourishing positive emotions. Grapefruit's
aroma inspires and clears the mind.
Citrus oils
help to eliminate emotional confusion and increase ones sense of
humor and well-being.
Grapefruit essential
oil is cold-pressed from the rind of ripe grapefruit. It is a yellow
liquid with a fresh, sweet citrus aroma, considered uplifting and
refreshing. Like essential oil of Lemon, grapefruit is cooling,
cleansing, and decongestive, and can be beneficial for an overheated
liver and sluggish lymph system. Further, the pleasing aroma has
laboratory-confirmed appetite reducing effects.
Like many of
the citrus oils, it has a unique 'fat dissolving' characteristic.
This is the essential oil most noted for use in reducing cellulite,
(it can be used by itself, or in a carrier and massaged into those
areas) and can be included in massage blends for this application.
It has been shown in laboratory studies to increase the metabolism
of adipose tissue (fat cells, and specifically 'brown' fat cells.)
It is also very useful for cleansing oily skin and helping with
acne due to its astringent nature. Key natural constituents of the
oil are Limonene and Myrcene.
Grapefruit oil
may also be helpful with rheumatic conditions where the joints feel
warm and swollen, and a burning sensation accompanies the pain.
On psychological
and emotional levels, grapefruit is noted to assist in cases of
depression where one may tend to overindulge in food or chemicals
to pacify their pain. The oil may clear the psychological 'heat'
and congestion that result from self-criticism and blame, promoting
a lightness of spirit.
In aromatherapy
applications, grapefruit is refreshing, cheering, slightly euphoria-inducing
and slightly energizing. Grapefruit's sweet and familiar aroma can
evoke warm feelings that melt sour dispositions. Grapefruit essential
oil is a "releasing" oil -- so personalities that tend
to harbor resentment or keep emotions bottled up can benefit from
inhaling this oil.
When peeling
a citrus fruit, you may experience the Essential Oil freely spraying
from the peel when applying pressure. Squirting the Essential Oil
into a candle flame is a nice winter activity that fascinates children
(and those that remained young) for long periods of time
Before the juice
of citrus fruits is processed, the peel of the fruits are carefully
removed and the Essential Oil extracted from the glands contained
in the outer layer of the peel. This is the process behind the term
"cold pressed" and it is obvious that any chemical deposits
applied to the skin of the fruit during conventional farming may
leech into the oil. If you are using citrus Essential Oil for skin
care or cooking, we strongly recommend our certified organic citrus
Essential Oils. Antiseptic, antitoxic, diuretic, stimulant ( lymphatic,
digestive), tonic. Astringent, antibacterial, antidepressant.
Suggested Use:
To assist in weight loss, try this blend: Grapefruit, Sweet Orange
and Lemon. The oils in this recipe are formulated in a 1:1:1 ratio.
Mix in a separate bottle (you may request mixing bottles in the
'comments' section of the checkout pages) - open and inhale deeply
whenever you desire. The uplifting, releasing effect can help bring
a positive emotional and mental state, helping you curb the craving
to eat when things get hectic!
For and emotional
'release' blend, try this in a diffuser or diluted in a carrier
oil and applied topically: 18 drops Grapefruit, 1 drop Bergamot
oil, 1 drop Rose Otto.
Use these ratios to create whatever amount of the blend you desire.
Use a few drops
in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your home. Sniff directly
from the bottle to curb appetite.
Has been used
to treat acne, congested and oily skin, cellulites and obesity,
lifts depression and aids in cases of nervous exhaustion and stress.
Employed as a fragrance component in soaps, detergents, cosmetics
and perfumes. It can be used to treat coughs, colds and anorexia
and headaches.
Add to shower
gel and gently brush the areas you want to firm before rinsing,
or add to lotion or massage oil for a stimulating massage.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
components are a-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, limonene, geraniol,
linalool, citronellal, decyl acetate, neryl acetate and terpinen-4-ol.
Blends Well
With
Citrus Essential Oils blend well with a lot of different oils, "lifting"
a blend to make it appear more energetic and lively. Lavender, Neroli,
Rose, Geranium, Fennel, Palmarosa, Essential Oils of spices and
many others. Ginger, clary sage, ylang ylang, lemon, bergamot, orange
blossom, rosemary, cypress, lavender, geranium, cardamom, peppermint
and eucalyptus oils
Safety
No known toxicity. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by
the FDA as food flavor.
Use in low concentration
in skin care since some individuals may react sensitive. Avoid exposing
the skin to direct sunlight after using this oil in skin care
phototoxic effect possible, though less likely than with other citrus
oils.
Citrus Essential
Oils are among the few Essential Oils with a limited shelf life.
Keep your citrus oils away from heat and direct sunlight, and in
tightly closed containers; your fridge would be great! Try using
them within 6 months of purchase. Older oils may not be appropriate
for medicinal or skin care purposes, but can still add citrus-power
to a diffuser blend.

Helichrysum
Essential Oil
helichrysum italicum - Corsica [France]
This sharply
scented oil has a reputation as an excellent cell regenerator and
helps to reduce the formation of scar tissue. It contains antiseptic,
antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial compounds.
Helichrysum stimulates the circulatory and digestive systems (detoxification
and cleansing), yet calms the respiratory system, and supports the
immune and structural systems. This oil is exceptional for calming
nerves, supporting circulation and healthy skin.
Rather powerful
and green at first; very medicinal. It soon transforms into a very
soothing, pleasant and subtle aroma, somewhat honey-like.
The potency
and incredible fragrancing power of this Essential Oil make it a
great investment, even though it is one of the pricier oils. If
you find it hard to dose the pure oil correctly (it is incredibly
strong and intense!), or shy away from the cost, start with Essential
Oils blended with Jojoba Oil, classified as"i/J"("in
Jojoba").
Helichrysum,
also known as Everlasting Essential Oil or Immortelle, has been
studied in Europe for regeneration of nerves, improving skin conditions,
and reducing inflammation while speeding healing. Aromatically,
it is thought to open the heart and clear old emotional wounds.
It is considered one of the most important essential oils in aromatherapy,
and our customers seem to think so too. We get many folks calling
back for more of this oil, proclaiming the results they've had were
so profound.
Suggested
Use
Helichrysum Essential Oil enhances massages and baths. Use it as
an inhalant to help relax the nervous system, and apply it to skin
to guard against pain and infection. Helichrysum oil is helpful
for circulatory disorders; it can relieve the pain of rheumatism
and arthritis. It has a beneficial effect on colds, flu, bronchitis,
coughs and asthma.
Helichrysum
oil has superb regenerating qualities and can assist in the healing
of scars, acne, dermatitis, stretch marks, boils and abscesses.
Folk medicine also presents this as a great boon for healing scars
and fighting the ravages of aging.
It aids the
digestive system, reducing liver and spleen congestion.
* Vapor therapy
or used in a bath
o In vapor therapy or diluted in the bath, helichrysum oil can help
with muscle aches and pains, respiratory problems and the digestive
system.
* Blended massage oil
o As a blended massage, oil helichrysum oil can assist with muscle
aches and pains, respiratory problems and the digestive system.
* Creams and lotions
o In a cream or as a lotion, helichrysum oil can be beneficial to
dermatitis, acne and the healing of scars as well as countering
the effects of aging.
For burns, apply
undiluted as soon as possible for immediate relief - only 1-3 drops
are necessary. For impact-type injuries, apply undiluted immediately
to prevent initial swelling and reduce healing time; use enough
to cover the area in a thin layer (this is often only a few drops).
Same for 'twists' (an ankle, for example). Repeat application again
in 30 minutes if you think it's necessary.
When using undiluted,
just put your index finger on the top of the bottle (for 5 and 12ml
bottles, otherwise dispense drop by drop using an eyedropper) and
invert the bottle ~ then apply from your fingertip. We have had
many reports of successful application to sports injuries and the
like, with rapid healing and minimal downtime.
For older injuries
(more than a few hours) it has been suggested to use diluted in
any carrier oil. We personally use Jojoba most of the time, though
any carrier will work. The dilution is a matter of personal preference,
though we keep a bottle of 20% Helichrysum on-hand (this is 6ml
in 24ml carrier oil, to fill a one-ounce glass bottle). We use this
for sports injuries and pain like backaches, stiff joints and the
like. For neck pain, we sometimes will use at full strength. For
many users, relief is reported as nearly immediate (though this
depends on how deep within the body the damage tissues are and how
old the injury might be) and more profound than products which simply
mask the pain. For further support for inflamed areas, 1% German
Chamomile can be included.
Helichrysum
is the only essential oil found to contain certain di-ketones, which
may support wound healing and scar reduction. It is suitable for
wound healing and for scars, resulting either from accidents, surgery
or acne. It may be especially effective when combined with Rose
Hip Seed oil. The triple unsaturated fatty acids may strengthen
the cell membranes and, combined with the regenerative qualities
of Everlasting, can heal wounds with little or no scarring. The
following combination is suggested Schnaubelt's 'Advanced Aromatherapy':
2ml Helichrysum essential oil and 1ml Sea Buckthorn essential oil
in 15ml Rose Hip Seed Oil and 15ml Tamanu oil; for 'old' scars,
use 2ml Helichrysum, 1ml Sea Buckthorn, and 1ml Sage OR Rosemary
Verbenone essential oil in the same base. We also highly recommend
Calendula essential oil for wound healing; there is a large body
of scientific evidence this oil has strong tissue healing properties,
and should synergize excellently with Helichrysum.
Helichrysum
oil may provide relief of joint pain for individuals with arthritic
conditions, with potential significant anti-inflammatory action.
Many folks use if for general stiff, painful and tight musculature
as well. A recent customer had this to say about this oil: "Just
a note of thanks for the speedy delivery and the great product.
You can add TMJ/facial pain to uses list...which is how I've been
using it. I mixed the 5ml bottle in a 2oz bottle of organic jojoba
and am applying to TMJ muscles and neck (also chest)...also have
experienced many interesting spirit/emotional 'releases'...this
stuff works wonders".
Helichrysum
may be of support for peripheral nerve-related conditions; it can
be applied in 5-20% dilution to areas of numbness or tingling. It
has been indicated by some users for support with symptoms of tinnitus:
drop on a cotton ball, placed in the ear while sleeping each night
for two weeks) and other forms of hearing loss or damage.
This essential
oil contains anti-inflammatory sesquiterpene hydrocarbons - this
compound acts by dissipating free radicals. Helichrysum essential
oil's other major components include neryl acetate, a monoterpenoid
ester with distinct, relaxing effects that may reduce tension of
the tissues in the area of the injury. The third major component
are the regenerative di-ketones, found in significant quantities
only in Helichrysum oil. "The pain- reducing, analgesic, and
regenerative effect of everlasting (Helichrysum) is unique: If applied
in time, it prevents hemorrhaging. It is also very effective for
joint pain..." - Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, Advanced Aromatherapy.
The oil is also
thought to be a strong chelator, supporting liver function and potentially
drawing heavy metals and toxins out of the body. It is noted as
one of, if not THE, most effective detoxification supporting essential
oils by Batagglia in 'The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy'. A strong
dilution can be used (1:1 in coconut oil, for example) and massaged
twice per day into the feet. The reflex points of the feet corresponding
to the liver may be of greatest help in this process.
The aroma is
thought to uplift the subconscious, and can be used in a diffuser
if desired. It is thought to be a releaser of Qi (Chi), unblocking
and regulating this essential energy in the body. It may help individuals
that are emotionally blocked, dispersing more deeply embedded repression.
At its most transformative, Helichrysum oil may assist in untying
the deepest of emotional knots, restoring freedom and compassion
to the eternal soul.
blends well
Although most essential oils blend well together, helichrysum oil
blends particularly well with bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, lavender,
mandarin and rosewood. Often blended with Sage oil for support of
reducing the appearance of old scars - use each oil at 3% Heli.
and 1% Sage in Rosehip seed and Tamanu oils (50:50) or 3% Heli.,
1% Rosemary Verbenone and 1% Sage (1%=8 drops essential oil per
ounce). Do not use Sage if pregnant.
Chemical composition
The main chemical components of helichrysum oil are a-pinene, camphene,
b-pinene, myrcene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, terpinen-4-ol,
neryl acetate, nerol, geraniol, eugenol, italidone and other b-diketones.
safety
Always test a small amount first for sensitivity or allergic reaction.
May be used safely as a natural aromatic. If pregnant or under a
doctor's care, consult a physician.

Jasmine
Essential Oil
jasminum officinale - India
Jasmine essential
oil has a sweet, exotic and richly floral smell. It is a valuable
remedy in cases of severe depression and soothes the nerves, producing
a feeling of confidence, optimism and euphoria, while revitalizing
and restoring energy. Jasmine oil may be beneficial for dry, greasy,
or oily skin. It may help with eczema when caused by stress, frigidity,
labor pains, laryngitis, lethargy, menstrual pain and problems.
The therapeutic properties of jasmine oil are anti-depressant, antiseptic,
aphrodisiac, anti-spasmodic, cicatrisant, expectorant, galactagogue,
parturient, sedative and uterine.
Floral, rich,
sweet and warm, exquisitely exotic and graceful. Some describe it
as"tea-like", and its dried flowers are used to flavor
black tea.
Jasmine is called
the King of Flowers (Rose being the Queen), and indeed this is probably
the most masculine of all the floral aromas, especially the Jasmine
Sambac, which is more musky, spicy, mysterious and exotic than the
Jasmine grandiflorium. Jasmine grandiflorium is softer, more gentle
and floral.
Jasmine grandiflorum
is more widely known and is frequently found in gardens all over
the world. It blooms in the early dawn, whereas Jasmine Sambac blooms
at night.
The potency
and incredible fragrancing power of Jasmine Essential Oil make it
a great investment, even though it is one of the pricier oils. If
you find it hard to dose the pure oil correctly (it is incredibly
strong and intense!), or shy away from the cost, start with Essential
Oils blended with Jojoba Oil, classified as "i/J" ("in
Jojoba").
Relaxing, intoxicating,
warming. Great aphrodisiac, can help against depression, and can
aid in finding restful sleep. Jasmine has a long tradition of being
used in childbirth as a relaxing and supportive remedy. Jasmine
is valued as a skin care ingredient for aiding dry, sensitive and
irritated skin.
It takes 8,000
carefully hand-picked blossoms to produce 1 gram (about 1 ml.) of
Jasmine Absolute. An experienced picker can pick 10,000-15,000 blossoms
per night. Flowers are picked in the early hours of dawn as they
are unfolding, and attention has to be paid not to bruise or mishandle
the flowers, since that would compromise the aroma.
This is an expensive
oil and is very potent. It is best to dilute before using; a little
will go a long way. We like jojoba oil as a carrier for a true Jasmine
essential oil perfume, or used in a blend of other oils. As a minor
component it mixes well with most other oils, though we find it
should be measured drop by drop, as Jasmine can easily overpower
other aromas.
Jasmine has
been nicknamed 'Queen of the Night' and 'Moonlight of the Grove';
for centuries, women have treasured it for its seductive, beautiful
fragrance. Jasmine oil is uplifting and stimulating for times of
hopelessness and nervous exhaustion. It helps reduce anxiety and
apathy, and can increase excitability when worn as a perfume.
Suggested Use:
Add a few drops to a diffuser for a relaxing, feminine aroma climate.
Add 3 drops to a hot bath for a blissful retreat, mixing the oil
with Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier or some Half & Half
prior to blending it with the water (in order to prevent the oils
from floating on the surface).
Add up to 3
drops to 1oz. of Carrier Oil or unscented body care product. Alternatively,
add up to 10 drops of Ancient Legacy's Bamboo Forest, Goddess or
Feminine Balance Blends (which contain Jasmine) to 1oz. of unscented
body care product.
If you are purchasing
this Essential Oil blended with Jojoba, increase the number of drops
you add to your bodycare or bath according to your liking. You can
use oils blended with Jojoba in a diffuser, but it is not recommended
in diffusers that work with cotton pads - Car Diffuser, Scent Ball,
Spa Scenter - or nebulizers. If using an aromalamp or Ancient Legacy's
Aromashell it will leave an oily residue that can be washed away;
but do not overheat the lamp dish!
Diffuse Jasmine
oil or apply topically - can be worn as a fragrance, but should
be diluted in your favorite carrier oil to allow the aroma to be
released over a longer period of time.
Chemical composition
There are well
over 100 constituents found in jasmine oil, but the main chemical
components are benzyl acetate, linalool, benzyl alcohol, indole,
benzyl benzoate, cis-jasmone, geraniol, methyl anthranilate and
trace amounts of p. cresol, farnesol, cis-3-hexenyl benzoate, eugenol,
nerol, ceosol, benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, y-terpineol, nerolidol,
isohytol, phytol etc
Blends Well With:
Most oils. Very suitable to make an aroma more round and complete
To create a
romantic mood, try blending it with the other great aphrodisiacs
- Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Rosewood, Patchouli, Vetiver, Rose etc.
Also nice: Bergamot, Orange, Mandarin & Neroli. Lavender and
Geranium, Frankincense and Clary Sage.
safety
No known toxicity.
. Make sure you are not overdosing, since Jasmine is very strong
and easily overpowering. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved
by the FDA as food flavor. Occasional skin sensitivity reported,
do patch test first. Jasmine oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and
generally non-sensitizing, although some people do have an allergic
reaction to the oil. Due to its emmenagogue properties it should
not be used in pregnancy. Using too much of this oil could impede
concentration, as it is a deeply relaxing oil

Lavender
Mailette Essential Oil
lavandula angustifolia vera - France
Lavender balances
the mood, clears the mind, has a long tradition in skin and hair
care as well as medicine and is used for many household solutions.
One of the unique characteristics of lavender is that it is not
merely energizing or relaxing, but balancing. The scent will rejuvenate
and inspire a tired person and relax, soothe and calm someone who
is stressed or tense. Both cleansing and calming, it is excellent
for supporting respiratory, skin, immune, muscular and glandular
systems. Floral, herbaceous, fresh. Well balanced and round, offering
a full, rich Lavender aroma. Lavender offers a multitude of benefits
and uses. It balances the mood, clears the mind, has a long tradition
in skin & hair care as well as medicine and is used for many
household solutions. One of the unique characteristics of Lavender
Essential Oil is that it is not merely energizing or relaxing, but
balancing. The scent of Lavender will rejuvenate and inspire a tired
person, and relax, soothe and slow down someone who is stressed
or tense. Harness the powers of Lavender to add balance and serenity
to our increasingly hectic lives. While pharmaceutical drugs are
limited to either stimulating or sedating a person, Lavender - like
many other remedies offered by nature - is able to re-establish
the person's balanced, harmonious and natural state without the
use of synthetic chemicals. Analgesic, , anti-depressant, antimicrobal,
antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, carminative,
cordial, cytophylactic, diuretic, deodorant, insecticide, nervine,
parasticide, sedative, stimulant, sudorific, tonic, vermifuge, vulnerary.
Lavender was used in earlier days as a condiment and for flavoring
dishes. The essential oil proves admirably restorative and tonic
against faintness, palpitations of a nervous sort, weak giddiness,
spasms and colic. It is agreeable to the taste and smell, provokes
appetite, raises the spirits and dispels flatulence. it can be use
for cuts, burns, sunburn, insect bites, rashes, insomnia, headaches,
and infections.
The founder
of Aromatherapy, R.-M. Gattefoss?, started modern research of Essential
Oils when he experienced the benefits of Lavender Essential Oil
after applying it to a burn on his hand. Lavender has a long tradition
as a beauty and well-being aid (Latin "lavare" means "to
wash"!) and in Europe it is even used in hospitals to help
patients relax
It's origin
may lay in Persia, but it is grown all over the world today, in
an attempt to satisfy the ever growing demand for this wonderful
oil. Unfortunately Lavender is frequently "cut" (stretched)
with synthetic compounds, so make sure you buy your Lavender from
a reputable source, committed to quality and purity.
Lavender is
one of the few oils still listed in the British Pharmacopoeia; it
is highly regarded for it's ability to promote tissue regeneration
and speed wound healing in some cases.
Lavender has
been studied for its ability to help restful, deep sleep; one clinical
report noted Lavender oil to be better than Valium in helping folks
get a good night's rest. One can diffuse Lavender in their bedroom
or just sprinkle a few drops on the sheets for this effect.
Suggested
Use
Apply a few drops to a tissue and inhale, or place on your pillow
for restful sleep. Add a few drops to your laundry rinse, your drawers,
and the water reservoir of your iron for fresh smelling laundry.
Two drops on your hair brush will rejuvenate hair and scalp. Add
5 drops to a hot bath for a blissful retreat that can help soothe
headaches and stressful times, mixing the oil with Ancient Legacy's
Coconut Emulsifier or some Half & Half prior to blending it
with the water (in order to prevent the oils from floating on the
surface). Add 5-10 drops to 1oz. of Carrier Oil or unscented body
care product, less if you are making body care for children.
Applying directly
to the feet can have a wonderful calming effect on many individuals.
Adding to a foot bath can have a marked effect on relieving fatigue.
Diffuse or apply
topically. Lavender essential oil is considered among the safest
oils in aromatherapy, and can be applied undiluted to the skin.
Has a wide range of uses. Use as a perfume or as you would a deodorant.
Safe for children; can be taken internally. Effective on burns,
insect bites and small cuts. A few drops in water 15 minutes before
a meal can significantly reduce appetite.

The main chemical
components of lavender oil are a-pinene, limonene, 1,8-cineole,
cis-ocimene, trans-ocimene, 3-octanone, camphor, linalool, linalyl
acetate, caryophyllene, terpinen-4-ol and lavendulyl acetate. Lavender
grown at high altitudes also tend to produce more 'linalool', a
natural constituent of many essential oils that has been the subject
of many studies involving improved sleep, lowering anxiety and lessening
stress
Blends Well
With
Almost everything;really nice with citrus notes and florals. Add
a bit of Vetiver or Patchouli for a warm base note. Clove will add
spice. Geranium, Cedarwood, Clary Sage and Pine are related in character
and make great blending partners. Mix Lavender and Frankincense
for your bath and steam bath or try Lavender and Rose Geranium.

pine, black pepper, clove, cedarwood, clary sage, pine, geranium,
vetiver, rosemary and patchouli.

stimulant. Always test a small amount first for sensitivity or allergic
reaction. Very safe oil. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult

Lemon
Essential Oil
citrus limonum - Italy
Lemon can help contain and care for infectious diseases, especially
colds and fevers. Its scent also helps to increase concentration
and neutralizes unpleasant odors. Some hospitals use lemon oil to
help calm frightened or depressed patients. Lemon boosts the immune
system by stimulating production of white and red blood cells. Lemon
oil is a must for every aromatherapy kit. Lemon has an uplifting
fresh citrus scent, has some immediate purifying qualities and may
help to settle the digestive system. It has an agreeable fragrance
and flavor the kids will love.
Light,
fresh citrus scent. Because of its color and its warm, cheerful
energy, some people call Lemon Essential Oil"the sunshine oil".
Refreshing and rejuvenating, its aroma inspires and brings fresh
energy; clears the mind. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional
confusion and increase ones sense of humor and well-being. A study
conducted with Lemon Oil found that typing errors were reduced when
Lemon was diffused in the office.
In moderation,
Lemon is a popular and effective skin care ingredient for oily and
inflamed skin. It is commonly used in the kitchen by adding Lemon
rind to dishes (Lemon Essential Oil can replace dry Lemon rinds,
but use very sparingly and from certified organic farming). It is
also a popular ingredient in household cleaners because it smells
clean and aids in the cleaning.
The Lemon tree
originates in Asia, but about 50 varieties are widely cultivated
today. Popular flavoring agent and perfume ingredient. Indispensable
in the kitchen. Antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic,
astringent, bactericidal, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, digestive,
sedative, antibiotic, febrifuge, hemostatic, insecticide, tonic,
vermifuge,
Lemon oil's
aroma is warming, enhancing and invigorating, and studies have shown
it to have antidepressant effects. Lemon oil apparently has a significant
effect on one's ability to concentrate: During a university study
in Japan, various essential oils were diffused into an office. When
Lemon Essential Oil was diffused, 54% fewer errors were made, with
Jasmine Oil, 33% fewer errors, and with Lavender Oil, 20% fewer.
Diffusion of essential oils was found to increase test scores by
up to 50% when diffused into study and test-taking areas. In addition
to its uplifting and clarifying nature, emotionally, lemon is considered
an opener of the heart. It is said to alleviate fears of losing
oneself, bringing trust and security.
Lemon essential
oil has been shown to eliminate many types of bacteria, and may
be the most effective oil for disinfecting a room using a diffuser.
It is often used in disinfecting blends with other antibacterial
oils - what makes lemon oil particularly pleasing for this use is
that its antiseptic properties are present with a lovely aroma.
Lemon is a great modifier for medicinal-smelling oils like tea tree
and eucalyptus. Lemon works synergistically on a therapeutic, aesthetic
and emotional level. This is very important when working with blends
containing strongly medicinal oils, which may have a tendency to
produce a negative aesthetic or emotional effect in aroma-sensitive
people.
In many European
countries, the oil is considered somewhat of a 'cure all', particularly
with infectious illness. Lemon also serves well as an insect repellent,
alone or in blends
Suggested
Use
Add a drop to flavor your restaurant water or drinking water. Use
it in lotions, shampoos, skin and hair mists, and body wash. It
is for the skin, especially oily skin. Use lemon oil in recipes
to stimulate the immune system. Many people put a few drops in an
atomizer with water to spray into the air and purify surfaces in
public restrooms, on airplanes, etc. It is a great fragrance to
diffuse in your office or home throughout the day. Use a few drops
in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your home. Add a few
drops to the water when washing dishes or cleaning the house. Add
very sparingly to food that you would otherwise prepare with Lemon
rind, such as desserts, salads and pastries. Diffuse or add a few
drops to a spray bottle with spring or purified water and spray
about a room to disinfect and deodorize. Add 2 drops to a glass
of water to disinfect. Combine with Peppermint Oil for a refreshing
lift.
Add 9 drops
of Ancient Legacy's Oily Skin or Acne Blends (which contain Lemon)
to 1oz. of unscented body care to help problem skin. Lemon essential
oil can be supportive in cases of anxiety, stress; some infections.
It has been studied to sharpen the awareness and improve test scores
when diffuser during study and test-taking.
General tonic, infections, detoxification,
general fatigue, obesity, acne, physical exhaustion, digestion ,depression,
rheumatism, cold and flu, skin care.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
components of lemon oil are a-pinene, camphene, b-pinene, sabinene,
myrcene, a-terpinene, linalool, b-bisabolene, limonene, trans-a-bergamotene,
nerol and neral.
Blends Well

Lemongrass
Essential Oil
cympobogan citratus - Egypt
Light, fresh
citrus scent with earthy notes. Refreshing and rejuvenating. Stimulating
and balancing. Its aroma inspires and brings fresh energy; clears
the mind. Popular skin care ingredient for oily, mature and inflamed
skin (in moderation). Also popular in Asian cuisine, and Lemongrass
Essential Oil can replace dried Lemongrass in the kitchen, but use
very sparingly because the oil is much more concentrated. Lemongrass
is frequently used to substitute much more expensive Essential Oils,
such as Lemon Verbena or Melissa officinalis, this is likely the
reason why it is one of the 10 best-selling Essential oils in the
world. Commonly used in place of Lemon Verbena and Melissa for economic
reasons
Lemongrass essential
oil has been used to support digestion, purification and regeneration
of tissues. Lemongrass may be one of the most therapeutic, all-around
anti-microbial essential oils available, with other important actions
that support the immune system. Lemongrass oil may help improve
circulation, digestion, and eyesight, while combating headaches,
infections and fluid retention. Spiritually, the aroma of Lemongrass
oil is thought to promote psychic awareness and purification.
Lemongrass has
been employed in traditional Indian medicine for infectious illness
and fever. Modern research carried out in India shows that it may
also act as a sedative on the central nervous system. Lemongrass
has recently been the subject of numerous scientific investigations
examining its potential use as an anti-cancer agent. Frankincense
and lemongrass are the two essential oils with the largest bodies
of research in this field.
Lemongrass essential
oil has also been shown to be a potent and important antibacterial
agent. In a study published in 'Letters in Applied Microbiology',
essential oil vapors (what one would create through using a nebulizing
diffuser, essential oils of Geranium and Lemongrass were shown effective
even against MRSA bacteria. This may prove useful in hospital settings
where such bacteria have become resistant against conventional antibiotics.
Due to its interaction with the immune system, and broad-spectrum
anti-microbial action, diffuser use of Lemongrass may be an excellent
means of 'disinfecting the air' in one's home or office.
Further, lemongrass
essential oil has also been studied as an antifungal agent against
Candida -- a naturally occurring fungus in our bodies which can
'overgrow' due to dietary imbalances (possibly too high a sugar
intake), resulting in vaginal irritation, rashes (particularly on
the feet) and the like. Topical application may be best to utilize
these properties, in a 5-10% dilution in any carrier oil.
Lemongrass is
also used a mosquito repellent, and has been the subject of many
studies investigating this use. Lemongrass can be highly effective,
especially when combined with other oils often used for this purpose,
such as Geranium, Lemon Tea Tree and Citronella. These oils can
be combined in topical formulas (with a total essential oil concentration
up to 15%) or even used in a diffuser for this purpose. Analgesic,
anti-depressant, antimicrobal, anti-oxidant, antipyretic, antiseptic,
astringent, bactericidal, carminative, deodorant, febrifuge, fungicidal,
galactagogue, insecticide, nervine, sedative (nervous), tonic.
Suggested Use
Lemongrass is to be used in a 10% dilution of Grapeseed blending
oil, and is used to help alleviate muscular pain, support circulation,
and promote muscle tone. This oil is beneficial when used for typical
sports injuries such as bruises and pulled ligaments, and promotes
the tightening of weak connective tissue. Lemongrass can be used
in a bath or massage blend to promote the reduction of cellulite
and toning of the skin. Lemongrass is a possible dermal irritant,
so dilute and test on skin before use. Use a few drops in a diffuser
to freshen the aroma climate of your home. Add very sparingly (dilute;
measure drops separately) to dishes that you would otherwise prepare
with the dried herb. Diffuse or apply topically. Traditionally used
as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, and for immune system support.
Can be supportive in cases of Candida overgrowth, athlete's foot,
and other bacterial and fungal infections.
It acts as a
sedative on the central nervous system. It is also used as an insecticide
and for flavoring food. it is also for infections, acne, cellulite,
skin care and diuretic
Add 9 drops
of Ancient Legacy's Firming, Theratone or Oily Skin Blends (which
contain Lemongrass) to 1oz. of unscented body care to help problem
skin.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
components of lemongrass oil are myrcene, citronellal, geranyl acetate,
nerol, geraniol, neral and traces of limonene and citral.
Blends Well With:
Lemongrass blends well with a lot of different oils, "lifting"
a blend to make it appear more energetic and lively. Lavender, Neroli,
Ylang Ylang, Rose, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Geranium, Fennel, Tea
Tree, resinous Essential Oils and many others . Lemongrass mixes well
with: Basil Oil, Cedarwood Oil, Eucalyptus Radiata Oil, Geranium Oil,
Lavender Oil, and Rosemary Oil. Basil, cedarwood, clary sage, lavender,
geranium, fennel, orange, chamomile, eucalyptus, tea tree, patchouli,
marjoram, elemi, sandalwood, ylang ylang and other citrus oils.

No known toxicity.
GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor.
Always test a small amount first for sensitivity or allergic reaction.
If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult a physician. Skin
test for sensitization before significant application. Lemongrass
oil may irritate sensitive skin when used as a compress or facial
oil. Use in low concentration only in skin care since some individuals
may react sensitive.

plant is strongly aromatic, and produces a wonderful essential oil
with a great variety of properties and uses. It is native to the
Mediterranean region, growing naturally in both central European

Marjoram oil traditionally has been used as an analgesic, anaphrodesiac,
anti-oxidant, antispasmodic, antiviral, bactericidal, carminative,
cephalic, cordial, diaphoretc, digestive aid, diuretic, emmenagogue,
expoectorant, fungicidal, hypotensive, laxative, nervince (nerve

as a nerve tonic, again it may be diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed
into the temples or the chest, allowing the aroma to be inhaled
over time.

Myrrh
Essential Oil
commiphora myrrha - Ethiopia
Myrrh is distilled
from the famous biblical resin used for embalming. It is remarkably
effective for emotional and respiratory needs. Myrrh essential oil
is produced from resin extracted from the Myrrh tree (or shrub)
found in the Middle East. The trunk of the Myrrh tree yields a natural
oleoresin when pierced, and the pale yellow liquid hardens into
reddish-brown drops known as Myrrh (the tree remains healthy after
harvest). The oil is a pale yellow/amber oily liquid with a warm,
sweet-balsamic, slightly spicy-medicinal scent.
Myrrh's first
medicinal use was documented some 3700 years ago. Myrrh essential
oil is highly prized for its healing and spiritual powers; the oil
has one of the highest sesquiterpene contents - a compound which
can directly affect the hypothalamus, pituitary and amygdaline.
Myrrh oil alone, or in combination with Sandalwood and Frankincense
can be used to anoint the 'third eye' as a meditation or yoga aid.
The aroma of Myrrh essential can be uplifting and assist in spiritual
opening - like Frankincense oil, Myrrh's effect on the central nervous
system is a gentle and calming one, able to instill a deep tranquility
of the mind. Anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic,
antiseptic, astringent, expectorant, sedative, uterine tonic.
As an ancient
'esoteric' magical herb, Myrrh is said to bridge Heaven and Earth,
strengthening the connection between our crown and base chakras.
This may allow the manifestation of dreams into this earthly realm.
As a 'Funeral' herb, Myrrh is said to ease grief and heal emotional
wounds, bringing peace and calm. Its extraction from the solitary
tree in the desert represents strength in harsh conditions.
Myrrh oil is
found today in many oral hygiene products, being anti-infectious,
anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory. It has been said to be one of
the best treatments for mouth ulcers. Myrrh Oil may also have hormone
like properties, and could be helpful in treating the absence of
menstrual periods outside of pregnancy. One of the oldest known
perfumery materials, already in use as an incense and embalming
ingredient in ancient Egypt
Used for centuries
as a fixative and fragrance component, and as an astringent in oral
care.
From the same
botanical family as Frankincense and Elemi.

Neroli
Essential Oil
cistus aurantium var,amara - Italy
Neroli essential
oil is a very precious oil produced from blossoms of the Bitter
Orange tree. These blossoms are small, white and very fragrant.
Our Neroli Oil is steam distilled, not solvent extracted. The high
cost is a result of requiring 1 ton of orange blossoms to produce
1 quart of oil. Neroli is named after Anna Maria de La Tremoille,
Princess of Nerola (we're not making this up!) who first introduced
the fragrance to Italy.
Neroli oil is
a plant oil similar in scent to bergamot produced from the blossom
of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium var. amara or Bigaradia).
Used in aromatherapy and massage, Neroli is considered to have a
soothing effect on the nervous system. Traditionally, neroli oil
was used not only to relieve tension and anxiety, but also in increase
circulation and heal thread vein scars.
The essential
oil is both a sedative and overall tonic to the nervous system,
and can be beneficial for most stress-related disorders of an emotional
origin. The oil has been said to treat heart palpitations, relieve
insomnia and reduce nervousness. Neroli's calming effect can be
tried by deeply inhaling the aroma, rubbing a few drops on the solar
plexus, diluting in Jojoba oil and wearing as a natural perfume,
or diffusing in small amounts. Neroli is considered one of the most
important aromatics for aromatherapy treatment for anxiety, and
depression resulting from stress and anxiety.
Neroli is one
of the premier oils for mature women's skin care (along with Rose
Otto and Clary Sage). The relaxing properties are imparted on a
cellular level, and the oil is especially beneficial for sensitive
skin. Salvatore Battaglia notes in The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy:
"The oil is reputed to have a rejuvenating effect on the skin,
as it has an ability to stimulate the growth of new and healthy
cells".
Neroli essential
oil has been noted as a tonic for the female reproductive system,
for relief of menstrual cramps - add to a bath or dilute to 10%
in Apricot Kernel Oil and massage into the abdomen.
The anti-bacterial,
anti-parasitic and anti-spasmodic properties of Neroli oil make
it possibly supportive for intestinal disorders. Again, use in a
bath or dilute and massage into the abdomen. Abdominal massage with
Neroli may be most effective when the stomach trouble is the result
of stress.
The aroma of
Neroli has been reported to successfully treat nervous depression
and shock; it is relaxing to the body and spirit, and may bring
relief in seemingly hopeless situations. The essential 0il used
in a diffuser or burner can enhance the ambiance of a room, bringing
an air of tranquility and relaxation.
Suggested use
Add a few drops to a diffuser for a relaxing, fresh aroma climate.
Add 5 drops to a hot bath for a blissful retreat, mixing the oil
with Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier or some Half & Half
prior to blending it with the water (in order to prevent the oils
from floating on the surface).
Add up to 6
drops to 1oz. of Carrier Oil or unscented body care product. Alternatively,
add up to 10 drops of Ancient Legacy's Dry Skin or Sensitive Skin
Blends (which contain Neroli) to 1oz. of unscented body care product.
If you are purchasing
this Essential Oil blended with Jojoba, increase the number of drops
you add to your body care or bath according to your liking. You

Niaouli
Essential Oil
melelueca quinquinervia - Madagascar
Australian Aborigines
have used Tea Tree and related plants since the beginning of time.
They welcomed and saved the crew of Sir Francis from scurvy and
exhaustion with a tea brewed from its leaves - hence the name.
Niaouli is a
relative of Tea Tree and contains many similar benefits.
Niaouli is recommended for use by persons with respiratory
conditions, and its expectorant properties support the healing of
respiratory irritations and sore throats. Niaouli can be either
diffused or inhaled from a tissue. When diluted with Grapeseed
blending oil, it can be applied directly to the chest and throat.
Niaouli is appropriate for formulas made for the resolution of colds
and flu. It can also
be used in a sitz bath to promote a healthy urinary tract.
Very strong
and medicinal smelling. Spicy-camphorous, warm scent. The properties
of Niaouli are very similar to Tea Tree but the aroma is softer,
sweeter, and to many people more pleasant. A great substitute if
you have trouble liking the scent of Tea Tree. Medicinal, stimulating,
purifying.
Niaouli has
been noted by Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt as an excellent general immune
system booster, and an agent to help one with allergic reactions.
His protocol is the application of 5-20 drops of oil directly to
the skin after a shower, for best absorption.
Niaouli oil
is considered an analgesic, antiseptic, bactericide, cicatrisant,
insecticide, decongestant and vermifuge. Its aroma is stimulating
and uplifting; it clears the head and may aid in concentration.
Niaouli oil is considered an excellent antiseptic for treating pulmonary
infections such as bronchitis and sinusitis. For respiratory problems
blends well with Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Pine, Myrtle, and Ravensara
(another favorite for respiratory infections).
Niaouli may
be used in place of Tea Tree oil when the smell of Tea Tree is found
objectionable due to its somewhat medicinal aroma. The medicinal
and aromatic properties of the two are considered similar, with
Niaouli having a somewhat less harsh scent - and being more commonly
used for respiratory conditions.
Suggested Use
Add 5-10 drops to 1oz. of unscented body or hair care product to
enhance their effectiveness. Add 2-3 drops to a bowl of hot water
for a purifying steam treatment. Apply to pimples with a Q-tip 2-3
times a day.
Diffuse, dilute
and apply topically. Add a few drops to a bowl of hot water and
inhale - or simply saturate the face - for a purifying steam treatment.
Apply to acne with a tissue or cotton swab 2-3 times a day. Please
refer to Aromatherapy literature for more detailed information on
how to use this Essential Oil as a healing aid. Has traditionally
been used as an anti-infectious and anti-bacterial.
It is used locally
for a wide variety of ailments, such as aches and pains, respiratory
conditions, cuts and infections. Due to its powerful antiseptic
qualities it's a good choice of oil to treat skin conditions such
as acne, boils, burns, cuts, insect bites and other similar conditions.
Used also for treating respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis,
catarrh, coughs and sore throats. Can be used in treating cystitis
and urinary infection, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism and
poor circulation.
Can offer support
for aches, acne, bronchitis, colds, coughs, cuts, dull skin, flu,
oily skin, sore throat, whooping cough.
Chemical composition
The main chemical
components of niaouli oil are 1,8-cineole, y-terpineol, limonene,
a-phellandrene, a and b pinene, linalool and piperitone.

Sweet
Orange Essential Oil
citrus sinesis - Italy
Orange mixes
well with many essential oils, plus softens and warms up the blend.
It also has a variety of therapeutic uses, from relaxing mind and
spirit to boosting circulation to protecting wood. It's user-friendly
in nature and inexpensive to keep on hand. It's a favorite with
infants and children who prefer the flavor and aroma of orange.
Orange oil has a pleasing citrus aroma that activates the artistic,
creative, intuitive part of the mind.
Warm, fresh
citrus scent, radiant, fruity and tangy. Cold pressed from certified
organic Oranges, this oil smells just like fresh Orange peel, very
satisfying. Before the juice of citrus fruits is processed, the
peel of the fruits is carefully removed and the Essential Oil extracted
from the glands that are located in the outer layer of the peel.
This is the process behind the term "cold pressed" and
it is obvious that any chemical deposits applied to the skin of
the fruit during conventional farming may leech into the oil. If
you are using citrus Essential Oil for skin care or cooking, we
strongly recommend our certified organic citrus Essential Oils.
Refreshing and
rejuvenating, its aroma inspires and brings fresh energy; clears
the mind. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional confusion and
increase ones sense of humor and well-being. Very comforting.
In moderation,
Orange Oil is an effective skin care ingredient, but do avoid large
concentrations. Orange rind and aroma is a popular ingredient in
the kitchen; Orange Oil can be a great alternative, but use very
sparingly and from certified organic farming.
Also a popular
ingredient in household cleaners because it smells clean and aids
the cleaning. In fact, Orange Essential Oil is one of the main ingredients
in certain products like Goo-gone, and it is great in removing stickers
from windows etc. Please be aware that Orange Essential Oil may
affect plastic and synthetic surfaces. Antidepressant. anti-inflammatory,
antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, digestive, astringent,
expectorant, fungicidal, sedative, insecticide
Suggested
Use
Take a few drops in drinking water or in honey for respiratory needs.
Adding a drop or two of delicious orange oil will make the flavor
of water taste great and help you accustom your tastes to using
other oils more regularly.
Use a few drops
in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your home. Add a few
drops to the water when washing dishes or cleaning the house. Add
very sparingly to food that you would otherwise prepare with Orange
rind, such as desserts, salads and pastries.
Add 9 drops
of Ancient Legacy's Buddha or Calming Blends (which contain Orange)
to 1oz. of unscented body care product for a soothing experience.
* 3 drops Ginger
Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cardamom Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
* 3 drops Vanilla Essential Oil
* 8 drops of certified organic Orange or Mandarin Orange Essential
Oil
Citrus Essential
Oils are among the few Essential Oils with a limited shelf life.
Keep your citrus oils away from heat and direct sunlight, and in
tightly closed containers; your fridge would be great! Try using
them within 6 months of purchase. Older oils may not be appropriate
for medicinal or skin care purposes, but can still add citrus-power
to a diffuser blend.
Obesity, water
retention, palpitations. Constipation dyspepsia, spasm. Nervous
tension and stress-related conditions, anorexia. Bronchitis, chills,
colds, flu. Gingivitis, disinfectant.

cinnamon and clove.
Safety

only in skin care since some individuals may react sensitive. Avoid

Patchouli
Essential Oil
pogostemon cablin - Indonesia
Patchouli has
known anti-inflammatory properties, and is used to treat cracked,
chapped, itchy, allergic, and inflamed skin. Patchouli is used extensively
in the cosmetic industry in anti-wrinkle treatments. Patchouli has
further been recognized as containing anti-toxin properties, making
it favorable for treating insect and snake bites. In Japan and Malaysia,
Patchouli is commonly used as an antidote to some poisonous snake
bites. It can also be used as an anti-fungal and anti-dandruff (added
to shampoo) agent.
Most fabrics
and carpets from India carry the scent of Patchouli leaves to repel
moths and other critters. In the East it is also commonly used around
the house because it is said to prevent disease and to release negative
emotions, putting problems in proportion. Antiseptic, regenerative,
deodorant. Anti-depressant, aphrodisiac, carminative, nervous stimulant,
Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral,
astringent, deodorant, insect repellent.
Distinctly herbaceous
and musky in aroma, a good Patchouli Oil has a satisfying earthy
quality, that is great to"ground"a person. It is a very
rich and long-lasting oil. The aroma can be rather crude when the
oil is young and grows more refined with age, as it becomes a valued"vintage
oil". The scent of Patchouli will linger longer than most other
Essential Oils, and should be used sparingly.
Patchouli oil
is used as a base note and fixative in perfumery, being a component
in many famous perfumes. As a fixative, it slows the evaporation
of other, more volatile oils so that their aroma may be released
over a longer period of time. A little can be used in natural perfume
blends, adding that special deep and earthy aroma. It mixes well
with many essential oils, with almost all common oils being mentioned
across a variety of sources these include Vetiver, Rosemary,
Sandalwood, Frankincense, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Myrrh, Jasmine, Rose,
Citrus oils, Clary Sage, Lemongrass, Geranium and Ginger.
As a crop, the
leaves of the plant are hand picked two or three times a year, with
the best oil-producing plant being harvested in the wet season.
Leaves are dried for three days and partially fermented before distillation
of the oil. The oil has been used in India for years for medicinal
purposes, but chiefly as an aphrodisiac and to perfume cloth. The
aroma of Patchouli in homepsun cloth was so pervasive that garment
makers importing their wares were obliged to scent their imitations
for the local marketplace.
Energetically,
Patchouli oil is considered warm in nature. It may help ground and
stabilize the the overanxious mind, bringing one back to one's body.
Long considered an aphrodisiac, it may work through this relaxing,
re-establishing connection to one's sensuality. The aroma may also
uplift and work as an antidepressant for some, and has been considered
to bring about a sense of spiritual nourishment.
As if this were
not enough, Patchouli is thought to be a bringer of prosperity and
abundance. Perhaps by allowing one to open to these possibilities
energetically, the oil is used in ceremonies and prayers by those
in need of financial or other type of infusion in their lives. One
may simply close their eyes, imagine the abundance they need, and
inhale the oils aroma for a few seconds.
The scent of
the 60's; when increased interest and traveling in India and Eastern
cultures introduced Patchouli to the West. However, many people
who base their perception of Patchouli on memories of the 60's have
never smelled high quality oil.
Patchouli oil
is thought to be antiseptic, antibiotic, and anti-fungal, but its
primary traditional medicinal usage is for skin conditions such
as oily skin and stimulating the growth of healthy hair. It has
has been described as 'very beneficial for the skin and may help
prevent wrinkles or chapped skin.' Also indicated as a vein tonic,
and may be a digester of toxic material in the body. Great skin
care ingredient and cell rejuvenator. Helps to find peace of mind
and is a wonderful aphrodisiac. Also a good masking agent for unpleasant
aromas. Due to its remarkable staying power, Patchouli is a great
fixative ingredient (a fixative is a substance that binds other
compounds, slowing down their evaporation and thereby making their
fragrance last longer).
Suggested
Use
Diffuse or apply
topically. May be worn directly on the skin as a perfume if one
is not sensitive. Patchouli oil has traditionally been used as a
tonic and stimulant; can be good for skin. Can offer support in
cases of acne, oily skin, scalp disorders, cracked skin, cellulite.
Impetigo, nervous exhaustion, headache, vomiting. Acne, athlete's
foot, dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections, cracked skin, oily
skin, wrinkles. Dandruff, oily hair. the rather earthy aura promotes
a grounding and balancing effect.
Use in a diffuser to freshen your environment. Add 2-3 drops to
a bowl of hot water to inhale the fragrant steam. Since Peppermint
may cause skin sensitizing in higher concentration, use only small
amounts for body and skin care application; 1-2 drops per 1oz. of
unscented body care product, less if you are making body care for
children. Peppermint is a GRAS approved food additive and is a great
spice for desserts, syrups, yoghurt dishes etc.
3 parts Patchouli
oil and 1 part Rosemary Cineol. This is a wonderfully uplifting
blend combining the deep earthiness of Patchouli oil with the invigorating
aroma of Rosemary. This can certainly be worn as a perfume, or used
in a diffuser.
When the going
gets tedious, try brightening with 3 parts Coriander, 2 parts Patchouli
and 1 part Bergamot. This may uplift the spirits and remind one
of the joy to be found in life.
For the sensually
insecure, try 1 part Geranium, 1 part Patchouli oil and 1 part Bergamot.
A beautiful yet simple blend for getting comfortable in ones
own skin.
Use a few drops
in a diffuser to mask unpleasant odors, or to enhance the aroma
climate of your home.
Add in low doses
to skin and hair care. If your partner likes this 'scent of India',
you can surround yourself with it by adding 9 drops to 1oz. of unscented
body care product, or adding up to 30 drops to 1oz. of Carrier Oil
to be dabbed on sparingly as a perfume.
Chemical composition
The chemical
components of patchouli oil are b-patchoulene, a-guaiene, caryophyllene,
a-patchoulene, seychellene, a-bulnesene, norpatchoulenol, patchouli
alcohol and pogostol.
Mixes well with:
Rose Absolute, Bergamot, Geranium, Lavender Essential Oil, Myrrh,
Ginger, and Ylang-Ylang. One of our favorite combinations is with
wild Rosemary in our Earth and Sky Blend. Geranium, Rose, Citrus

sandalwood, cedarwood, rose, orange blossom, bergamot, cassia, myrrh,
clary sage, elemi. lavender, lemongrass, neroli, pine, sandalwood
and rose.

a small amount of essential oil first for sensitivity or allergic
reaction. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult a physician.

the FDA as food flavor. Use in very small amounts only, because
the aroma is strong and long-lasting. Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing.
May cause loss of appetite which is fine if eating habits need to
be curved. apparently sedative in low doses and rather stimulant
in high.

a classic, fresh, spicy-cool oil that opens, energizes and uplifts.
Smooth, slightly spicy, camphory, woody herbaceous. earthy and moderately
licoriceIt helps relieve nervous fatigue, burnout with insomnia,
chronic depression and infection. Somewhat like Eucalyptus, yet
softer. Spicy-camphorous, warm scent; powerful and medicinal. Stimulating,
purifying. The name of the tree in Malagasy means "aromatic
leaf", which may be the reason while different botanical species
sometimes are offered under this name. expectorant, neurotonic,
anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, antiseptic.
This is true
Ravensara essential oil, certified organically grown in Madagascar.
Ravensara is a strong antiviral oil which has been used to support
healing from influenza, and is also an excellent nerve tonic. Ravensara
is an all around great aromatherapeutic essential oil. The aroma
is warm, and not dissimilar to Eucalyptus Radiata, but with a hint
of spice.
It may be used
in treatment of respiratory conditions - Ravensara oil is said to
work effectively against acute cases of the flu, both through its
anti-viral effects and its uplifting of mood and energy levels.
Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt in Advanced Aromatherapy states: 'For the treatment
of acute flu, ravensara is best taken internally 1 drop every 2
hours for acute flu) and/or applied externally'. For associated
breathing conditions, and other chronic respiratory discharge associated
with viral infection, add a few drops of Ravensara to a steaming
bowl of water and inhale deeply.
Ravensara oil
is recommended in almost every aromatherapy text for Herpes Zoster,
i.e. 'Shingles' - in a blend with Tamanu oil. Mix in a 50/50 ratio
and apply regularly to the outbreak - terrific results are noted
with this combination.
Suggested Use
Add to a diffuser to purify the aroma climate of your surroundings.
Add 2-3 drops to a bowl of hot water for a purifying steam treatment.
Ravensara is
used for respiratory problems, cuts, wounds, liver and lung infections,
flu, sinusitis, viral hepatitis, cholera, herpes, mononucleosis,
insomnia, muscle fatigue, frigidity, headaches, nausea, nervous
tension, colds, coughs, fever, cold sores, shingles and burns. It
is ideal for use in an aerosol: to disinfect a room which might
have been contaminated.

with
Most herbs, like Thyme, Marjoram, Rosemary, and Lavender. Cedarwood.
Myrtle Lemon, Frankincense, and others. Eucalyptus is a very dominant
aroma that never takes the "back seat" in a blend. Bay,

Red
Mandarin Essential Oil
citrus reticulata - Italy
The essence of Mandarin invigorates with a fruity aroma that helps
to lift moods and reduce anxiety. Red Mandarin Oil has excellent
uplifting qualities as well as offering a safe, tonic affect on
the digestive system. Warm, fresh citrus scent, radiant, fruity
and tangy. It is said that this fruit was a traditional gift for
the Mandarins of China, hence the name
Sometimes Mandarin
Orange is listed as a synonym for Tangerine. The aromas however
are distinctly different, with Tangerine being more candy-like and
temperamen
Although closely
related, Mandarin Orange is rounder and softer in aroma than Tangerine.
Refreshing
and rejuvenating, its aroma inspires and brings fresh energy; clears
the mind. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional confusion and
increase ones sense of humor and well-being. Very comforting, soothing
and warming.
In moderation,
Mandarine Orange is an effective skin care ingredient, but avoid
large concentrations due to potential phototoxic reactions. It can
also be a great discovery in the kitchen; use very sparingly in
sauces, dressings, pastries and desserts (we recommend certified
organic Mandarin Orange for culinary uses).
Mandarin is
noted in France for being "the children's remedy", used
much in the same way Roman Chamomile is suggested. Texts describe
its use for both relieving stomach upset, and to sooth restless
children (sometimes labeled 'hyperactive'). Kurt Schnaubelt notes
in Advanced Aromatherapy: "The scent of mandarin is as sweet
as candy. The presence of the highly sedative anthranilic acid ester
makes this oil the first choice for use with children suffering
from anxiety, nervousness, or stress. Mandarin oil can be taken
internally and can be used to freshen indoor air."
Mandarin essential
oil is considered a general tonic for the digestive system. It can
aid in the breakdown of fats through regulation of the bile. The
oil may be taken internally in small amounts (1-3 drops), or massaged
into the belly in a carrier oil (try a 3-5% dilution; about 20-30
drops per ounce of carrier).
The essential
oil is safe for use during pregnancy, and is actually often used
in a massage blend for the prevention of stretch marks. Battaglia,
in the Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, suggests blending with other
oils with the same purpose such as Lavender and Neroli, in a carrier
oil with essential fats, like Wheatgerm, Hemp and Evening Primose.
Mandarin is also called for in cases of acne and oily skin in general,
and can make a wonderful addition to an adolescent skin care formula
(use Hazelnut as a carrier, and consider Spike Lavender and Myrtle
as well).
Suggested Uses
Diffuse or apply
topically; can be taken internally - one to two drops at any one
time.Traditionally has been used for soothing children, supporting
digestion, preventing stretch marks, and for care of oily skin.
Can be supportive in cases of anxiety and nervousness. May help
improve appearance of stretch marks and cellulite.
Use a few drops in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your
home. Add a few drops to the water when washing dishes or cleaning
the house. Add very sparingly to food for an exciting Mandarin Orange
flavor, for example, in desserts, salads and pastries.
* 3 drops Ginger
Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cardamom Essential Oil
* 1 drop Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
* 3 drops Vanilla Essential Oil
* 8 drops of certified organic Orange or Mandarin Orange Essential
Oil
Citrus Essential
Oils are among the few Essential Oils with a limited shelf life.
Keep your citrus oils away from heat and direct sunlight, and in
tightly closed containers; your fridge would be great! Try using
them within 6 months of purchase. Older oils may not be appropriate
for medicinal or skin care purposes, but can still add citrus-power
to a diffuser blend.
Blends Well
With: Citrus Essential Oils blend well with a lot of different oils,
"lifting" a blend to make it appear more energetic and
lively. Lavender, Neroli, Ylang Ylang, Rose, Sandalwood, Frankincense,
Geranium, Fennel, Tea Tree, resinous Essential Oils and many others.
Safety
No known toxicity. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by
the FDA as food flavor. Mandarin oil is non-toxic, non-irritating
and non-sensitizing. Avoid high concentration in skin care, phototoxic
effect possible.

Rose
Essential Oil
rose damascene - Turkey
Rose oil fragrance
is beneficial in soothing and harmonizing the mind, helping with
anger, depression, grief, fear, stress, and nervous tension. It
has been used for years for poor circulation and heart problems
as well as high blood pressure, and digestive disorders.
It takes 60,000
rose blossoms, picked in the early hours of dawn as they are unfolding,
to gain 1 oz. of Rose Essential Oil. The harvest is rushed to the
distiller and the oil crafted immediately.
The origin of
the Rose can be found in ancient Persian gardens, and Persians were
the first to distill Rose water from the petals. According to legend,
the Rose Essential Oil was discovered when Nour-Djihan, a Persian
princess, married Mogul Emperor Dhihanguyr. The canals around the
wedding party had been filled with rose water (imagine!!), and as
her and her lover enjoyed the waters in a small boat she noticed
a thin film on its surface Rose Essential Oil.
Its aroma has
been interlaced with human history ever since, lending its radiance
and grace to perfumes and inspiring poets and lovers.
Rosy":
Floral, rich and sweet, graceful and delicious. Bulgarian Rose is
finer in character than Moroccan Rose, and more tender. It is the
most valued Rose Oil today.
Once you have
smelled the genuine Rose Essential Oil you will never again be willing
to accept a synthetic Rose fragrance as replacement. Whereas the
Rose plant has produced an aroma out of many hundred components,
synthetic scent merely reproduces the most dominant ingredients,
missing out on the subtle refinement of genuine Rose Oil.
The potency
and incredible fragrancing power of Rose Essential Oil make it a
great investment, even though it is one of the pricier oils. If
you find it hard to dose the pure oil correctly (it is incredibly
strong and intense!), or shy away from the cost, start with Essential
Oils blended with Jojoba Oil, classified as"i/J"("in
Jojoba").
Balancing, relaxing,
inspiring, comforting. Rose symbolizes passion, romance, sympathy
and luxury. Great skincare properties, refining the structure of
the skin and balancing its functions. Its mildness, as well as its
cooling and astringent properties, make it great for nurturing the
sensitive skin surrounding the eyes (as always, properly diluted!).
Rose opens the
heart and has brought calming comfort to many births. It is a very
feminine aroma that is frequently used in Aromatherapy to improve
a woman's well-being.
Rose oil was
first distilled by the Arabic Physician Avicenna, who wrote an entire
book on its many healing properties. Rose makes a great skin oil
for all skin types, and especially for dry, sensitive, or aging
skin - for this we recommend a 5% dilution in Jojoba oil. It is
currently one of our bestsellers, often being diffused to bring
the magical scent of Rose to a room or house. Adding a very small
amount of oil to a bath or other essential oil blends goes a long
way to bringing its fantastic qualities into one's life. Its uplifting
aroma will blend well with many other oils, including Jasmine, Sandalwood,
Lavender, and Amber.
Rose oil absolute
is made with a delicate process. Similar in a way to 'effleurage'
(the pressing of petals in fat to produce an extract), the flower
essence is extracted, with a wax-like 'concrete' being produced.
Through a second extraction of the concrete, rose oil absolute is
yielded. This method is more efficient than steam distillation,
producing nearly 7 pounds of oil per 10,000 pounds of roses (distillation
yields 1 pound oil per 10,000 pounds of roses), with a corresponding
lower cost than a steam distilled variety - some find the absolute
has a more 'complete' aroma, with more depth true to the Rose flower.
Oil of rose
can be utilized in a number of ways; it is very gentle, being suitable
for use on the skin 'neat', in massage oil, and in a bath, as well
as in a diffuser. As a perfume, the absolute can be worn directly
on the skin its 'tenacious' quality will have the aroma slowly
released for many hours. For therapeutic use for the emotions, a
dilution of 10% of in jojoba oil is often used, being massaged into
the heart area a diffuser is very effective for this purpose
as well. The absolute can also be added in small amounts to any
skin cream, though using a home-made natural recipe is often the
nicest.
Suggested Use:
Diffuse or apply
topically or add to baths (after the tub is full, as to not release
all the aroma before one has gotten in!) Has been traditionally
been used for stimulating the mind, and bringing balance and harmony
to the emotions. Can be supportive for relaxation and balance of
emotions. Add a few drops to a diffuser for a relaxing, feminine
aroma climate. Add 5 drops to a hot bath for a blissful retreat,
mixing the oils with Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier or some
Half & Half prior to blending it with the water (in order to
prevent the oils from floating on the surface).
Rose is highly
concentrated, a little can add a wonderful scent to your favorite
carrier oil - we recommend jojoba for skin care.
Add 3-4 drops
to 1oz. of unscented body care product. Alternatively, add up to
10 drops of Ancient Legacy's Cherry Blossom, Dry Skin, Mature Skin
or Sensitive Skin Blends (which contain Rose) to 1oz. of unscented
body care product.
You can create
your own Rose Water by adding 3 drops of pure Rose Essential Oil
to a spoon of honey, and blending it with 1oz. distilled water.
This is superior to most of the Rose Waters you can buy in the stores,
since those are frequently made with synthetic Rose fragrance and
contain large amounts of preservatives. Keep refrigerated, and remember
to use it soon since it will eventually spoil. Rose Water is great
in desserts and pastries. If you want to use it as a natural skin
toner make sure you don't use too much honey, or leave it out altogether;
simply fill the Rose Water into a mister, shake well, and spray
liberally.
Aromashell it will leave an oily residue that can be washed away
- but do not overheat the lamp dish!
Chemical composition
The chemical
composition of rose oil is one of the most complex and contains
more than 300 known compounds, yet the main chemical components
of rose oil can be listed as -citronellol, phenyl ethanol, geraniol,
nerol, farnesol and stearpoten with traces of nonanol, linalool,
nonanal, phenyl acetaldehyde, citral, carvone, citronellyl acetate,
2-phenylmenthyl acetate, methyl eugenol, eugenol and rose oxide
Blends Well
With: Most oils. Very suitable to make an aroma more round and complete.
To create a romantic mood, try blending it with the other great
aphrodisiacs - Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vetiver, etc.Rose blends well
with most other oils, particularly Patchouli, Cedarwood Oil, Bergamot,
Sandalwood, Chamomile, and Ylang-Ylang.
Safety
No known toxicity. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by
the FDA as food flavor. Some sources recommend not using Rose oil
in the first 4 months of pregnancy most likely because it
is a well-known oil for supporting the time of birth.
Always test a small amount of essential oil first for sensitivity
or allergic reaction. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult
a physician.

Rosemary
Esential Oil
rosemarinus officinalis 1.8 cineol - Turkey
Fresh, energizing and herbaceous, Rosemary is an essential oil that
works to support the circulatory, nervous and muscular systems of
the body. Strong, herbaceous, fresh, balsamic scent. Powerful and
camphoraceous. Smells a bit like Pine Essential Oil. Antiseptic,
analgesic, anti-bacterial,
antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, astringent, diuretic, digestive,
fungicidal, stimulant, insecticide, invigorating, nervine, restorative,
diaphoretic, decongestant, hypertensive, parasitic.
Refreshing,
empowering, mind-clearing. Very popular in skin and hair care. Has
been known to help enhance memory.
Rosemary was
used in the middle ages to drive away evil spirits. It refreshes,
clears the mind, and energizes body, mind and (good) spirit. It
enhances circulation and eases muscle stiffness and aches when added
to a bath or massage products.
Rosemary's long
history includes use by grave-robbing bandits during the plague
of the 1400's - the thieves doused themselves in 'Four Thieves Vinegar'
(a mixture including Rosemary leaf, Clove, Lemon and Cinnamon) to
protect themselves from infection while going about their 'business'.
Folklore tells us the flowers of Rosemary were once white, and turned
red forever when the Virgin Mary placed her cloak over the bush.
The aroma of
Rosemary oil is warm and stimulating, being used to strengthen mental
awareness. Its warming qualities may help some with arthritic joints
and rheumatism, being used in compresses, baths, or in massage blends.
It has a long reputation for helping memory, not only by stimulating
the mind but by increasing blood flow.
For centuries
Rosemary oil has been used for troubled skin and for improving hair
growth, perhaps due to its possible skin regenerative properties.
It can also be an excellent antiseptic and anti-microbial agent,
Suggested Use
Apply a few
drops to a tissue and inhale; or add to a diffuser. This is great
to wake up and get your brain cells going.
Diffuse or apply
topically or add to baths (after the tub is full, as to not release
all the aroma before one has gotten in!). Add a few drops to warm
water and soak a small towel for a compress on sore joints. Has
been traditionally been used for stimulating the mind, enhancing
clarity, relieving stiffness of joints, stimulating healthy hair
growth. Can be supportive for conditions of rheumatism, arthritis,
hypertension (small doses), hypotension (higher doses), respiratory
infections, hair loss.
Students report
that it helped them do better in exams to smell Rosemary - or a
Rosemary based blend - during study time, and then surround themselves
with the aroma during the test. This is due not only to the stimulating
powers of Rosemary, but also because the area of the brain for memory
and that which processes scent are closely connected.
If you like
you can make your own hair care blend, combining Rosemary with Clary
Sage, Jasmine, Patchouli and Lavender according to your liking.
Add to unscented shampoo or conditioner (5-10 drops per 1oz. of
product), or apply 1 drop to your hairbrush to rejuvenate and naturally
scent hair and scalp.
Adding just
5 drops to a warm bath brings welcome stimulation to sore, stiff
and overworked muscles. In order to prevent the oils from floating
on the surface, blend the Essential Oil with some Half & Half,
honey, vinegar or Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier before adding
it to the water.
Arteriosclerosis,
fluid retention, palpitations, poor circulation, liver ailments,
gallbladder inflammation, gallstones, painful menstruation, vaginal
discharge, arthritis, gout, physical fatigue, rheumatism, mental
fatigue, nervous tension, amnesia, stress-related conditions, hysteria,

GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor.
Pregnant women should not use the herb as either an essential oil
or a tea preparation, as either may cause premature labor. Excessive
amounts of rosemary taken internally can cause fatal poisoning.
Rosemary oil taken internally, may irritate the stomach, intestinal
tract, and kidneys. Those prone to asthma may be bothered by rosemarys
strong scent, and the active ingredients may also cause seizures
in epileptics. Rosemary Oil may cause skin irritation if not diluted
properly. Keep these precautions in mind when using Rosemary Oil
around the others.

Sandalwood
Essential Oil
santalum album - India
Sandalwood has
a sensual, musky scent, reminiscent of the Orient. Besides its presence
in many perfumes, sandalwood is also a big part of numerous different
types of religious and cultural ceremonies and traditions. Sandalwood
is a sensual oil that is calming, balancing and harmonizing. It
contains anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-viral compounds and has
a balancing action on the skin.
Dry-woody and
warm. Oriental, luxurious and balsamic, deep & soft aroma. The
Indian Sandalwood population has been nearly exhausted due to over-harvesting,
and prices have been continuously increasing. Ancient Legacy offers
an Australian Sandalwood as well, with a more smoky note, and comes
at a much lower price. The divinely sweet aroma, a softly balsamic
base-note, evokes the Earth element at its most sensual yet deeply
tranquil.
The potency
and incredible fragrancing power of Sandalwood Essential Oil make
it a great investment, even though it is one of the pricier oils.
If you find it hard to dose the pure oil correctly (it is incredibly
strong and intense!), or shy away from the cost, start with Essential
Oils blended with Jojoba Oil, classified as"i/J"("in
Jojoba").
Relaxing, sedative
to the nervous system, warming. Great aphrodisiac, can help against
depression, and can aid in finding restful sleep. Antidepressant,
antiphlogistic, antiseptic (urinary and pulmonary), antispasmodic,
aphrodisiac, astringent, bactericidal, carminative, cicatrizant,
diuretic, expectorant, insecticide, sedative, tonic.
Sandalwood is
valued in skincare for its moisturizing and skin healing properties.
Sandalwood is one of the oldest known perfume materials. In the
East it's used as incense, for erecting temples and as part of the
cremation ceremony. It is also forming the famous Aytar perfume
in combination with Rose. Sandalwood has been traditionally been
used for enhancing meditation and spiritual practice, and for skin
revitalization. Has been shown in some studies to prevent particular
kinds of skin cancer; also reported to reduce stress and improve
sleep.
A search of
the research database Pub Med for Sandalwood Oil yields very interesting
results. Several papers have been published demonstrating sandalwood's
ability to prevent skin cancers caused by both UV radiation and
toxic chemical exposure. (in Anti-Cancer Research, Jan-Feb 2008:
'Effects of alpha-santalol on proapoptotic caspases and p53 expression
in UVB irradiated mouse skin' and Jul-Aug 2007: 'Chemoprevention
by alpha-santalol on UVB radiation-induced skin tumor development
in mice', also in Carcinogenisis Sep. 2006: 'Chemopreventive effects
of alpha-santalol on ultraviolet B radiation-induced skin tumor
development in SKH-1 hairless mice' more studies available
on Pub Med at www.pubmed.gov). Sandalwood has also been shown to
improve sleep in a Japanese study, topically applied Sandalwood
oil significantly reduced the total waking time when sleep/wake
cycles were investigated.
While these
are only preliminary studies, Sandalwood can be added to skin care
formulas -- it has a wonderful aroma, enjoyed by both men and women,
and helps hydrate dry skin. Small amounts can be worn 'neat' (undiluted)
upon retiring for the evening to reap its potential sleep-enhancing
effects. This may be an excellent way of enjoying its stress reducing,
or axiolytic action, as well.
The oil is high
in sesquiterpenes, a class of compounds which have been studied
in Europe for stimulating of the pineal gland and the limbic region
of the brain - the center of our emotions. Clarifying and stilling
to the mind, and refreshing to an overheated body, Sandalwood is
though to reconnect one to the primordial state of being. Diminishing
the need to 'overthink', Sandalwood can instill a sense of inner
unity, helping re-establish an acceptance of reality as it is.
Sandalwood has
been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, traditionally as
a skin tonic, and of course for yogic meditative practice. It may
be beneficial for both acne and dry skin; it has also been used
to treat chronic bronchitis. The aroma of Sandalwood is sedative,
with possible antidepressant effects. The oil may also be helpful
in cases where depression has lead to sexual difficulties, and can
support the nervous system and circulation.
Suggested Use:
Diffuse or apply
topically. Can be worn undiluted as a natural perfume; excellent
in skin care recipes at 1-5% concentration for dry skin
Add a few drops
to a diffuser for a relaxing, "grounding" aroma climate.
Add 5 drops to a hot bath for a blissful retreat, mixing the oils
with Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier or some Half & Half
prior to blending it with the water (in order to prevent the oils
from floating on the surface).
Add up to 5
drops to 1oz. of unscented body care product. Alternatively, add
up to 10 drops of Ancient Legacy's Tansu Wood, Meditation, Passion,
Sacred, Feminine Balance, Dry Skin or Mature Skin Blends (which
contain Sandalwood) to 1oz. of unscented body care product.
If you are purchasing
this Essential Oil blended with Jojoba, increase the number of drops
you add to your body care or bath according to your liking. You
can use oils blended with Jojoba in a diffuser, but it is not recommended
in diffusers that work with cotton pads - Car Diffuser, Scent Ball,
Spa Scenter - or nebulizers. If using an aromalamp or Ancient Legacy's
Aromashell it will leave an oily residue that can be washed away;
but do not overheat the lamp dish!

Tea
Tree Essential Oil
melalueca alternifolia - Australia
Tea Tree is
soothing and can help with stinging and itching associated with
insect bites, sunburns, minor burns, scalds, abrasions, stinging
nettles and other irritating skin conditions. It is penetrating,
aromatic, a natural solvent and an antiseptic. Tea Tree Oil is steam
distilled from an extremely hardy tree native to Australia - when
cut down, the Tea Tree will quickly regrow from the stump. The Aborigines
in northeastern New South Wales have used tee tree as a healing
herb for many generations. They make a poultice of the leaves and
treat skin infections, cuts and wounds. Australian Aborigines have
used Tea Tree and related plants since the beginning of time. They
welcomed and saved the crew of Sir Francis from scurvy and exhaustion
with a tea brewed from its leaves - hence the name.
The oil is now
well known in natural medicine for its antimicrobial, anti-viral,
and anti-fungal effects. Some of its immune supportive properties
may be a result of its anti-depressant effects, as one's emotional
well-being has a significant impact on the body's ability to resist
infection. Tea Tree essential oil can also help sooth insect bites,
but is even better used as an insect repellent; one aromatherapist
claims Tea Tree is the best she's ever used. A must for the traveler's
medicine kit.
Tea Tree essential
oil has been the subject of numerous scientific studies validating
its antibacterial and antiviral actions. Tea Tree has proven to
be particularly efficacious in the treatment of Candida infections
in many regions of the body. Some natural therapists advise 'spiking'
vaginal suppositories with a small amount of the oil; others indicate
to take one drop at a time 3x a day for 'Thrush', where the Candida
fungus has infected the throat.
The essential
oil has also been studied for its effect against MRSA (Methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus), the 'superbug' causing infections in immuno-comprimised
hospital patients. This antibiotic resistant staph has been effectively
treated with Tea Tree oil in some cases; however, a blend of well-known
antimicrobial oils may have a better effect against this particular
rare, yet dangerous, infection. Excellent choices to boost Tea Tree's
potency are Geranium, Lavender and Oregano. (Another study noted
that a Methicillin-resistant strain of staph bactiera was most suseptable
to a blend of Geranium essential oil and Grapefruit Seed Extract,
or GSE.)
Tea Tree Oil
is found in many oral hygiene products, and its wide spectrum of
action has made it traditionally useful in treating mouth sores
and gums, for acne, and for herpes infections, as well as for general
immune system stimulation and for support when fighting respiratory
infections. Tea Tree has the wonderful property of effectively fighting
infections without harming tissues. It can be used 'neat' as a treatment
for small cuts and scrapes; many parents mix it 50/50 with Lavender
for a soothing, natural anti-bacterial treatment for their young
ones. This blend may be applied directly to injuries, and will both
sooth the area and prevent infection.
After landing
the H.M.S. Endeavor in Botany Bay in 1770, Captain James Cook and
his party came upon a grove of trees thick with sticky, aromatic
leaves that they found made a spicy tea. The 'Tea Tree', as it was
called by Captain Cook, became a valued bush remedy used by early
European settlers.
in 1923 an Australian
government scientist, Dr. A. R. Penfold, conducted a study of tea
tree Essential Oil and discovered it to be 12 times more potent
as an antiseptic bactericide than carbolic acid (the standard at
the time). Tea Tree oil became recognized, according to the British
Medical Journal in 1933, as 'a powerful disinfectant, non-poisonous
and non-irritating'.
Very strong
and medicinal smelling. Spicy-camphorous, warm scent. For many people
who have experienced the benefits of Tea Tree Oil, this scent has
become equivalent to the 'scent of healing'. Medicinal, stimulating,
purifying. Antirheumatic, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant,
insect repellent, rubefacient, stimulant (nerves, uterus and heart
muscles), tonic, vermifuge, antiseptic, Antibiotic, antibacterial,
anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, diaphoretic, immune stimulant,
anti-infectious, decongestant, parasiticide

Thyme
ct. Linalool Essential Oil
thymus vulgaris ct. linalool - France
Thyme ct. Linalool
is the gentlest of all thyme oils. It is spicy, warm and herbaceous.
It is powerful and penetrating, green; extracted from thymus vulgaris
from the Labiatae family. It gives courage and is uplifting and
reviving. Non-irritating thyme oil is the mildest of them all, yet
very effective within a wide range of applications. The gentlest
of all Thyme oils. Spicy, warm, herbaceous. Powerful and penetrating,
medicinal, green. Gives courage, uplifting, reviving. Non-irritating
Thyme Oil, and the mildest of them all, yet very effective within
a wide range of applications. Thyme essential oil has been traditionally
used as a general tonic for the nerves and stomach. It may also
help with bacterial infections, respiratory infections, headaches
and joint pain.
Stimulating
and balancing. There are many natural variations (chemotypes) of
the Thyme family, and this one is usually found growing at high
altitudes. Thyme Sweet has a more gentle action than Thyme White
which makes it preferable for use with children and the elderly.
This oil can have an effect on obsessive emotions, helping to bring
a sense of balance. This oil can have an effect on obsessive emotions,
helping to bring a sense of balance. Famous for its strong antimicrobial
and antiseptic effect. It is excellent at reducing gum inflammation.
Effective on bacteria that cause caries and is used as an ingredient
in different tooth pastes and mouth disinfection fluids.
Thyme chemotype
(ct.) linalol is a very wonderful thyme oil for supporting the immune
system. The oil has a calming effect, is very anti-infectious, and
can be used in the long term to support health. I like to use it
for people who have allergies, get colds often, and are generally
prone to getting sick. It is gentle and powerful, and can be used
with children or adults.
Thyme essential
oil is extracted, by steam distillation, from the fresh or dried
leaves and flowering tops of the plant. This is the Linalool chemotype,
the most gentle variety of Thyme oils. The oil is mainly located
in small glands on the leaves and contains thymol, paracymene &
linalool.
The main component
of Thyme oil is Thymol, a powerful antiseptic which considered to
be quite toxic if used improperly. It is common knowledge among
aromatherapists that the essential oil of Thyme is one of the most
potently antiseptic essential oils known. Thymol has been extensively
documented for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal action.
According to Jean Valnet, M.D., Thyme oil kills the anthrax bacillus,
the typhoid bacillus, meningococcus, and the agent responsible for
tuberculosis and is active against salmonella and staphylococcus
bacteria. In addition, this component has been studied for its effects
on gingivitis and plaque-caused organisms in the mouth (it is used
in Listerine for its antiseptic actions).
Thyme oil may
strengthen the nerves and stimulate the brain in order to help memory
and concentration. It may help to release mental blocks at the same
time. The thymol content of Thyme essential oil works as an expectorant
and cough suppressant and is frequently used in cough syrups prescribed
for lung ailments like bronchitis; Thyme oil has a warming ability
which helps to eliminate mucous and phlegm. When combined with fenugreek,
Thyme essential oil works to relieve the pain of migraine headaches.
The carminative
properties of Thyme make it an effective treatment for stomach upsets.
It may also increase the propensity of white blood cells, perhaps
increasing the power of the immune system. Also, by possibly helping
to eliminate excess uric acid from the body, conditions like gout,
sciatica, arthritis, and rheumatism can be more easily combatted.
Thyme essential oil may valuable as a local application to neuralgic
& rheumatic aches and pains. Thyme oil can be a stimulant for
the digestive system, helping to eliminate worms, reduce gastric
infections, and ease dyspepsia. Thyme is also good for headaches
caused from gastric complaints. Thyme Oil may be good for the scalp,
helping to treat dandruff and hair loss. Dermatitis, wounds, boils
and carbuncles may also be diminished with this essential oil.

Thyme
Thymol Essential Oil
thymus vulgaris ct. thymol - France
The volatile
oil of thymus exerts a calming influence on smooth muscle. Thymol
is 20 times more antiseptic than phenol, but unlike the latter,
it does not have an irritant effect on the mucosa and may safely
be taken internally. The oil has been shown to be effective against
gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi and yeasts such
as candida albicans. Rosmarinic acid has an anti-inflammatory action.
Thymus' bitter component stimulates the appetite, aids a sluggish
digestion and improves liver function. The carvacrol stimulates
the mucous membranes into secretory activity, while the saponins
are reflex-stimulating expectorants. Bactericidal, astringent, aphrodisiac,
parasiticide, stimulant, anti-viral, expectorant, antiseptic, antispasmodic.
has strong anti
infectious properties and is a great oil for the cold and flu season.

Ylang
Ylang Complete Essential Oil
cananga odorata - Madagascar
Exotic. Mysterious.
Spicy. These words describe Ylang Ylang Complete. Its aroma can
both uplift and relax. It has been around for centuries and has
been most frequently used as an aphrodisiac, yet it has many other
stimulating qualities as well. Ylang Ylang is a treasured essential
oil and is even more powerful when combined with other oils. In
Asia the flowers of the Ylang Ylang tree are spread on the beds
of newly weds.
It has a long
history in skin and hair care products and does great balancing
the skin's oil production. Asian medicine use it as a stimulant
for hair growth. Frequently part of perfumes with a romantic/sensual
theme.
Intensely sweet
and soft. Ylang Ylang is a rich floral note and somewhat Jasmine-like,
therefore sometimes called 'Jasmine for the poor man'. It is probably
the richest of all the floral Essential Oil aromas and can easily
be overdosed.
Ylang Ylang
is distilled over the course of 14 hours. During this time various
grades of Ylang Ylang are extracted: Extra, #1, #2, #3. The left
over plant material is used to make the inferior Cananga Oil. Ylang
Ylang #3 is the most commonly offered quality and a nice, pleasant
oil.
Strongly relaxing,
which is why Ylang Ylang is frequently called a sedative in Aromatherapy
literature. As a relaxation aid it reduces stress and tension, and
helps to relieve feelings of frustration, anger and depression.
It is also a great aphrodisiac and sleeping aid; the perfect aroma
for the bedroom. Aphrodesiac, anti-depressant, anti-infectious,
antiseborrheic, antiseptic, euphoric, hypotensive, nervine, regulator,
sedative (nervous), stimulant (circulatory), tonic.
In traditional
aromatherapeutic use, a very important property of Ylang Ylang is
its ability to slow down rapid breathing and rapid heart rate -
hence it may be especially useful in shock and trauma situations.*
Ylang Ylang Oil is good for any skin as it balances the natural
oil production. Its sweet, heavy, distinctive fragrance is used
widely in perfumes and cosmetics. Ylang Ylang Oil's softer floral
scent is often used in men's fragrances as an alternative to the
sweeter and more feminine rose.
Like the three
major aphrodisiac oils - Rose Oil, Neroli Oil and Jasmine Oil -
Ylang Ylang is beautifully uplifting emotionally and relaxing. The
calming effect of this oil may be the reason it is considered an
aphrodisiac as using it would lessen tensions or anxieties. Ylang
Ylang can help balance male and female energies, reducing internal
conflict between these seeming opposites. In this manner, the aroma
of the oil may positively influence sexual relationships, and help
restore confidence.
Suggested
Use
Diffuse or apply
topically, particularly in massage oil. Has been traditionally used
as an aphrodisiac, and to calm overexcited physiological states.
Used in hair preparations to promote thick and shiny hair, also
to add luster to skin.
Ylang Ylang
essential oil can be supportive for conditions of over-excitation
and temper.
Diffuse 1-2
drops in your bedroom or relaxation area. Add 1-2 drops to a warm
bath, mixing the oils with Ancient Legacy's Coconut Emulsifier or
some Half & Half prior to blending it with the water (in order
to prevent the oils from floating on the surface).
Ylang Ylang
works best when it is very subtle. If your partner likes it as much
as you do, add 1-2 drops of Ylang Ylang to 1oz. of unscented body
care or massage oil. Since Ylang Ylang is great for the hair as
well, apply 1 drop to your hairbrush to rejuvenate and naturally
scent hair and scalp.
Always use in
moderation, because too much can annoy those around you and leave
you feeling nauseated and sluggish.
High blood pressure,
hypenea (abnormally fast breathing), tachycardia, palpitations,
Depression, frigidity, impotence, insomnia, nervous tension and
stress-related disorders, aphrodisiac, anxiety, panic, fear, anger,
rage, low self-confidence.
Chemical composition
The main chemical components are linalool, geranyl acetate, caryophyllene,
p-cresyl methyl ether, methyl benzoate, benzyl acetate, benzyl benzoate
and other sesquiterpenes.
There are different
'pressings' of ylang-ylang oil - with them being called 'extra'
and then 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressing. The extra is the very first
pressing and contains the highest amounts of esters and therefore
has the sweetest odor, while the later pressings have a less-sweet
odor.
The 'extra'
is not used in aromatherapy, but used in the perfume industry and
to have a 'complete' essential oil for aromatherapy, the 'extra'
is combined with the 1st and 2nd pressings to form the complete
ylang-ylang essential oil.
Blends Well
With
Rose, Sandalwood, the spice oils (very nice: Black Pepper, Cardamom,
Clove), Vetiver, citrus Essential Oils, Geranium, Lavender and many
more. Ylang Ylang is a great note to use in small amount in the
background of a blend, since it makes the blend more full and round.
Lemon, eucalyptus, clove, orange, ginger, sandalwood, neroli, chamomile,
clary sage, rose, grapefruit. rosewood, jasmine, vetiver, bergamot
and rose.
Safety
No known toxicity. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved
by the FDA as food flavor. Use in very small amounts only. Non toxic,
non-irritant, use in moderation - too much of the heady scent can
cause nausea or headaches. Avoid if low blood pressure or history
of apnea. External use only for topical application or diffusion
in Jet Diffusor. Never use undiluted. Avoid contact with eyes.
